Data on the Semantic Web is semi-structured and does not follow one fixed schema. Faceted browsing [23] is a natural technique for navigating such data, partitioning the information space into orthogonal conceptual dimensions. Current faceted interfaces are manually constructed and have limited query expressiveness. We develop an expressive faceted interface for semi-structured data and formally show the improvement over existing interfaces. Secondly, we develop metrics for automatic ranking of facet quality, bypassing the need for manual construction of the interface. We develop a prototype for faceted navigation of arbitrary RDF data. Experimental evaluation shows improved usability over current interfaces.

ion: Usually an OO component can be characterized by a noun, e.g., calendar, flight manager, fire alarm system. Operations: Components have operations, and these are characterized in the Operations facet. Operates On: This facet describes the objects that the component acts on, e.g., integers, set, list, resource. Dependencies: These are non-functional dependencies and characteristics which limit the scope of reuse to a certain context, e.g., C++ code, Unix-based software, HOOD design models. An example could be a stack (abstraction) of integer (operates on) written in C++ (dependencies) with operations push, pop, top, and swap. It is possible to have more than one term for each facet. In addition to the terms filled in for the facets, a component will have other attributes, such as size, developer, and date. The distinction between facets and other attributes is that the facets are the properties most relevant for reuse. For the facets, structured term spaces are provided, facilita...

Semantic Wikis allow users to semantically annotate their Wiki content. The particular annotations can di#er in expressive power, simplicity, and meaning. We present an elaborate conceptual model for semantic annotations, introduce a unique and rich Wiki syntax for these annotations, and discuss how to best formally represent the augmented Wiki content. We improve existing navigation techniques to automatically construct faceted browsing for semistructured data. By utilising the Wiki annotations we provide greatly enhanced information retrieval.

L oosely coupled distributed systems are characterised by a separation of resources and a consequent need for a facility to aid in the location of those resources. Traditionally, this role of resource location has been fulfilled by a name service i.e. a facility which maps the name of a resource to its location at a given network address. As the size of the resource name space grows, however, additional support for resource location is required, in the form of support for the discovery of the name of the resource that is to be located. A trading facility implements an approach to resource location which eliminates the need to know the name of a resource in order to locate it and instead allows specification of a required service in an abstract manner. Resources (or services) are classified by type, and the location of such services is guided principally by a specification of the required service type, with requests for services being mapped directly to services of an appropriate type...

This thesis proposes a methodology, notation/theory, and software framework for organising documents using formal concept analysis. The documents are organised for the purposes of retrieval and analysis using background information in the form of a taxonomy of terms. An emphasis is placed on the development of a methodology that employs scalable computer programs to assist humans in the process of organisation, retrieval and analysis of document collections.

The new ISO standard ISO/IEC 13250 Topic Maps defines a model and architecture for the semantic structuring of link networks. Dubbed the "GPS of the information universe", topic maps will become the solution for organizing and navigating large and continuously growing information pools, and provide a "bridge" between the domains of knowledge representation and information management. This paper presents several technical issues of which are of great interest when applying topic maps to real world applications. The main focus of the paper is the introduction of "topic map templates" -- a semi-official term coined by the standards' committee for a concept that the authors argue is a necessary but as yet unstandardized addition to the basic model. Furthermore association taxonomies, class hierarchies, and consistency constraints of topic maps are presented and discussed.

Abstract. This paper discusses how facet-like structures occur as a commonplace feature in a variety of computer science disciplines as a means for structuring class hierarchies. The paper then focuses on a mathematical model for facets (and class hierarchies in general), called formal concept analysis, and discusses graphical representations of faceted systems based on this model.

Abstract—Semantic Search has become an active research of Semantic Web in recent years. The classification methodology plays a pretty critical role in the beginning of search process to disambiguate irrelevant information. However, the applications related to Folksonomy suffer from many obstacles. This study attempts to eliminate the problems resulted from Folksonomy using existing semantic technology. We also focus on how to effectively integrate heterogeneous ontologies over the Internet to acquire the integrity of domain knowledge. A faceted logic layer is abstracted in order to strengthen category framework and organize existing available ontologies according to a series of steps based on the methodology of faceted classification and ontology construction. The result showed that our approach can facilitate the integration of inconsistent or even heterogeneous ontologies. This paper also generalizes the principles of picking appropriate facets with which our facet browser completely complies so that better semantic search result can be obtained.
