A class of selfdesigning clinical trials is considered which according to an effective but simple, finite learning algorithm consists of automatically adaptively planned weighted group sequential trials with a decision about rejection of the nullhypothesis at each step, but the full levelatest at the end of the study preserved. 1. Introduction In a recent paper [1] selfdesigning clinical trials are introduced in a general setting for normal variables with known variances, for which in [2] a concrete proposal for building the test statistic is given. There the sequence of sample sizes is fixed prior to the beginning of the study. In [3] based on a general learning scheme completety selfdesigning trials are considered, using the inverse normal method, cf. [4], for transforming the pvalues associated with the respective test statistics in the sequential groups. Abstract: In Selfdesigning clinical trials, confidence intervals are derived for the difference and the ratio of normal means, where the results of the independent study stages are combined using the weighted inverse normal method. The confidence intervals always hold the predefined nominal confidence level. During the course of the Selfdesigning trial, the sample sizes as well as the number of study stages can be determined simultaneously in a completely adaptive way. Selfdesigning may be considered as the limit case of adaptive group sequential designing of O'Brien and Fleming type when the full significance level is shifted to the last stage. We consider the effect measures difference and ratio of normal means, where the latter has not yet been considered in group sequential trials so far.
