Public opinion leaders and activists characterized the Egyptian “Arab Spring ” of January 2011 as a “Facebook Revolution”. They highlight the intrinsic power of social media as an influencing factor for social change. Un-deniably, social media played important roles in that revolution process. However, these roles cannot be dis-connected from the socio-political contexts. This paper discusses the use of social media, particularly of Face-book, by the April 6th Youth Movement (A6YM), a decisive actor of the Egyptian protests. It is based on the analysis of two Egyptian newspapers and one American newspaper, between 2008 and 2011. We propose that a) social media provided alternative mechanisms for political expression and organization, b) social media con-tributed to the genesis and consolidation of the A6YM and to the establishment of youth political identities, and c) the combination of “bits and streets ” amplified not just the movement’s mobilization but the degree of opposition experienced by the Egyptian regime.

To my family, for years of unconditional love and support. Most of all, I dedicate this dissertation to my wife and friend, Judith, for believing and laughing. Acknowledgements Writing acknowledgements feels like an overwhelming and almost absurd task, but I should begin by thanking the people of Loughbregan and Ballyreagh for welcoming me and sharing their thoughts, feelings, hopes, and concerns. I regret that I cannot somehow give each of them individually the credit and thanks they deserve. I hope I have done some justice to the special fabric of their lives, their dreams, grievances, fears, and efforts. It was a privilege. Various library staffs allowed access to their holdings and assisted me in finding specific materials. They include the regional library boards, the Northern

“Identity politics ” is an ambiguous concept that is invoked more often than it is ref-erenced, and a phenomenon that is summarily dismissed more often than it is seri-ously theorized.1 The borders of the identity politics umbrella are ever-expanding and have come to include almost every protest movement since the late 1960s: from second wave feminism to environmental groups, from hippie sit-ins to the disability movement, from gay and lesbian activism to the “new right ” agenda, from ethnic separatism to New
