We review the holographic correspondence between field theories and string/M theory, focusing on the relation between compactifications of string/M theory on Anti-de Sitter spaces and conformal field theories. We review the background for this correspondence and discuss its motivations and the evidence for its correctness. We describe the main results that have been derived from the correspondence in the regime that the field theory is approximated by classical or semiclassical gravity. We focus on the case of the N = 4 supersymmetric gauge theory in four dimensions, but we discuss also field theories in other dimensions, conformal and non-conformal, with or without supersymmetry, and in particular the relation to QCD. We also discuss some implications for black hole physics.

For large N and large g 2 Y MN, the AdS/CFT correspondence maps the computation of 〈W 〉 in the CFT into a problem of finding a minimum surface in AdS =-=[294, 295]-=-. 3.5.1 Wilson Loops and Minimum Surfaces In QCD, we expect the Wilson loop to be related to the string running from the quark to the antiquark. We expect this string to be analogous to the string in ...

We present further evidence for a dual conformal symmetry in the four-gluon planar scattering amplitude in N = 4 SYM. We show that all the momentum integrals appearing in the perturbative on-shell calculations up to four loops are dual to true conformal integrals, well defined off shell. Assuming that the complete off-shell amplitude has this dual conformal symmetry and using the basic properties of factorization of infrared divergences, we derive the special form of the finite remainder previously found at weak coupling and recently reproduced at strong coupling by AdS/CFT. We show that the same finite term appears in a weak coupling calculation of a Wilson loop whose contour consists of four light-like segments associated with the gluon momenta. We also demonstrate that, due to the special form of the finite remainder, the asymptotic Regge limit of the four-gluon amplitude coincides with the exact expression evaluated for arbitrary values of the Mandelstam variables.

In the mapping from four-dimensional gauge theories to string theory in AdS space, many features of gauge theory can be described by branes wrapped in different ways on S 5, RP 5, or subspaces therefore. These include a baryon vertex coupling N external charges in the fundamental representation of SU(N), a bound state of k gluons in SO(2k) gauge theory, strings coupled to external charges in the spinor representation of the gauge group, and domain walls across which the low energy gauge group changes. If R is the fundamental representation of SU(N), SO(N), or Sp(N), then in the proposal of =-=[1,5]-=-, one simply uses an elementary Type IIB string, placed at the point ⃗m of S 5 or RP 5 . Abstract: This paper is a continuation of ArXiv:0707.1324 where improved holographic theories for QCD were set up and explored. Here, the IR confining geometries are classified and analyzed. They all end in a “good ” (repulsive) singularity in the IR. The glueball spectra are gaped and discrete, and they favorably compare to the lattice data. Quite generally, confinement and discrete spectra imply each other. Asymptotically linear glueball masses can also be achieved. Asymptotic mass ratios of various glueballs with different spin also turn out to be universal. Mesons dynamics is implemented via space filling D4 − ¯ D4 brane pairs. The associated tachyon dynamics is analyzed and chiral symmetry breaking is shown. The dynamics of the RR axion is analyzed, and the non-perturbative running of the QCD θ-angle is obtained. It is shown to always vanish in the IR.

...hibit confinement in the IR. Here, as a definition of confinement, we require that the Wilson loop exhibits an area law behavior. We compute the Wilson loop holographically, using the prescription of =-=[4]-=-, as the action of a classical string world-sheet with fixed UV boundary conditions. We show that confinement requires the scale factor to vanish sufficiently fast in the IR. We formulate this require...

However, in these cases the corresponding superconformal theories to which the string theory (in the anti-de Sitter backgr...
