Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing accounts for an astonishing volume of current Internet tra#c. This paper probes deeply into modern P2P file sharing systems and the forces that drive them. By doing so, we seek to increase our understanding of P2P file sharing workloads and their implications for future multimedia workloads. Our research uses a three-tiered approach. First, we analyze a 200-day trace of over 20 terabytes of Kazaa P2P tra#c collected at the University of Washington. Second, we develop a model of multimedia workloads that lets us isolate, vary, and explore the impact of key system parameters. Our model, which we parameterize with statistics from our trace, lets us confirm various hypotheses about file-sharing behavior observed in the trace. Third, we explore the potential impact of localityawareness in Kazaa.

Napster pioneered the idea of peer-to-peer file sharing, and supported it with a centralized file search facility. Subsequent P2P systems like Gnutella adopted decentralized search algorithms. However, Gnutella's notoriously poor scaling led some to propose distributed hash table solutions to the wide-area file search problem. Contrary to that trend, we advocate retaining Gnutella's simplicity while proposing new mechanisms that greatly improve its scalability. Building upon prior research [1, 12, 22], we propose several modifications to Gnutella's design that dynamically adapt the overlay topology and the search algorithms in order to accommodate the natural heterogeneity present in most peer-to-peer systems. We test our design through simulations and the results show three to five orders of magnitude improvement in total system capacity. We also report on a prototype implementation and its deployment on a testbed. Abstract—The use of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications is growing dramatically, particularly for sharing large video/audio files and software. In this paper, we analyze P2P traffic by measuring flowlevel information collected at multiple border routers across a large ISP network, and report our investigation of three popular P2P systems—FastTrack, Gnutella, and Direct-Connect. We characterize the P2P trafffic observed at a single ISP and its impact on the underlying network. We observe very skewed distribution in the traffic across the network at different levels of spatial aggregation (IP, prefix, AS). All three P2P systems exhibit significant dynamics at short time scale and particularly at the IP address level. Still, the fraction of P2P traffic contributed by each prefix is more stable than the corresponding distribution of either Web traffic or overall traffic. The high volume and good stability properties of P2P traffic suggests that the P2P workload is a good candidate for being managed via application-specific layer-3 traffic engineering in an ISP’s network. We devise a simple model to study the phenomenon of free-riding and the effect of free identities on user behavior in peer-to-peer systems. At the heart of our model is a strategic user of a certain type, an intrinsic and private parameter that reflects the user's generosity. The user decides whether to contribute or free-ride based on how the current burden of contributing in the system compares to her type. We derive the emerging cooperation level in equilibrium and quantify the effect of providing free-riders with degraded service on the emerging cooperation. We find that this penalty mechanism is beneficial mostly when the "generosity level" of the society (i.e., the average type) is low. To quantify the social cost of free identities, we extend the model to account for dynamic scenarios with turnover (users joining and leaving) and with whitewashers: users who strategically leave the system and re-join with a new identity. We find that the imposition of penalty on all legitimate newcomers incurs a significant social loss only under high turnover rates in conjunction with intermediate societal generosity levels.

Peer-peer networking has recently emerged as a new paradigm for building distributed networked applications. In this paper we develop simple mathematical models to explore and illustrate fundamental performance issues of peer-peer file sharing systems. The modeling framework introduced and the corresponding solution method are flexible enough to accommodate different characteristics of such systems. Through the specification of model parameters, we apply our framework to three different peer-peer architectures: centralized indexing, distributed indexing with flooded queries, and distributed indexing with hashing directed queries. Using our model, we investigate the effects of system scaling, freeloaders, file popularity and availability on system performance. In particular, we observe that a system with distributed indexing and flooded queries cannot exploit the full capacity of peer-peer systems. We further show that peer-peer file sharing systems can tolerate a significant number of freeloaders without suffering much performance degradation. In many cases, freeloaders can benefit from the available spare capacity of peer-peer systems and increase overall system throughput. Our work shows that simple models coupled with efficient solution methods can be used to understand and answer questions related to the performance of peer-peer file sharing systems.

Internet traffic is experiencing a shift from web traffic to file swapping traffic. Today a significant part of Internet traffic is generated by peer-to-peer applications, mostly by the popular Kazaa application. Yet, to date, few studies analyze Kazaa traffic, thus leaving the bulk of Internet traffic in dark. We present a large-scale investigation of Kazaa traffic based on logs collected at a large Israeli ISP, which capture roughly a quarter of all traffic between Israel and US.

Recently, peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have emerged as an attractive solution to enable large-scale content distribution without requiring major infrastructure investments. While such P2P solutions appear highly beneficial for content providers and end-users, there seems to be a growing concern among Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that now need to support the distribution cost. In this work, we explore the potential impact of future P2P file delivery mechanisms as seen from three different perspectives: i) the content provider, ii) the ISPs, and iii) individual content consumers. Using a diverse set of measurements including BitTorrent tracker logs and payload packet traces collected at the edge of a 20,000 user access network, we quantify the impact of peer-assisted file delivery on end-user experience and resource consumption. We further compare it with the performance expected from traditional distribution mechanisms based on large server farms and Content Distribution Networks (CDNs).
