Abstract Our study used multilevel regression analysis to identify individual- and neighbourhood-level factors that determine individual-level subjective well-being in Rhini, a deprived suburb of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The Townsend index and Gini coefficient were used to investigate whether contextual neighbourhood-level differences in socioeconomic status determined individual-level subjective well-being. Crime experience, health status, social capital, and demographic variables were assessed at the individual level. The indicators of subjective well-being were estimated with a two-level random-intercepts and fixed slopes model. Social capital, health and marital status (all p \.001), followed by income level (p \.01) and the Townsend score (p \.05) were significantly related to individual-level subjective well-being outcomes. Our findings showed that individual-level subjective well-being is influenced by neighbourhood-level socioeconomic status as measured by the Townsend deprivation score. Individuals reported higher levels of subjective well-being in less deprived neighbourhoods. Here we wish to highlight the role of context for subjective well-being, and to suggest that subjective well-being outcomes may also be defined in ecological terms. We hope the findings are useful for implementing programs and interventions designed to achieve greater subjective well-being for people living in deprived areas.

Well-being is generally recognized as a vital and multi-dimensional component of health in both civilian and military contexts. The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. ” Moreover, well-being has been identified as a critical aspect of military readiness by the recent United States Department of Defense Suicide Prevention Task Force and the current Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. However, the concept of well-being poses challenges, including the lack of universally accepted definitions, its multi-dimensional structure, and the broad, eclectic understanding of health that it implies. This review will include a summary of 1) definitions, 2) dimensions, and 3) measures of well-being. This paper will also review the well-being literature in the context of both suicide risk/prevention and resilience in order to better understand the concept of well-being and how it relates to preventing suicide and enhancing resilience. In addition, this work will provide practical tools and recommendations for enhancing well-being and resilience in military groups, while reducing the risk for negative outcomes such as suicide.

The use of digital portable music devices such as MP3 players has rapidly increased during the last decade, and the sheer availability of music offered by such players raises questions about their impact on listeners ’ mental and physical health and well-being. This article explores MP3 player use as an everyday tactic for affect regulation, here understood as an individual’s efforts to maintain or change the intensity or duration of a given affect. The ability to understand and regulate affects has significant health implications, and among the tactics relevant to such regulation, engagement with music has proven to be particularly successful. The material presented in this article is based on a qualitative interview study focused on MP3 player use as a medium for musical self-care. Because MP3 users can listen to whatever they want, whenever they want, and target their music in the interests of managing and regulating moods and emotions, the MP3 player represents a valuable and convenient technology of affect regulation.

Purpose: This study examines quality of life and psychological distress in individuals with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome (MRKHS) and Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS), two syndromes belonging to the field of “disorders of sex development”. Methods: Fifty women with MRKHS and eleven individuals with CAIS participated. The German versions of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (short version, WHOQOL-Bref), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-D) were used as standar-dized instruments to measure quality of life and psychopathology. Additional questions concern-ing demographic variables and suicidality were included. Results: In both patient samples ex-amined, general quality of life reported was in the average range (CAIS: mean z-score = −0.43, SD = 1.05; MRKHS: mean z-score = −0.11, SD = 1.06). The standardized instrument assessment revealed increased psychological distress (proportion of clinical cases according to the BSI: CAIS: 54.5%;

This study investigated the effects of income, health, social capital, marital status, employment, education and crime experience on subjective well-being within a poor community in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It appeared that higher income is associated with higher subjective well-being and that social capital serves as an important subjective well-being predictor in all income groups. Efforts must be made to ensure that countries do not develop economically at the expense of other aspects of life important for well-being in the very poor, such as social capital.
