A polymorphic, constraint-based type inference algorithm for an object-oriented language is defined. A generalized form of type, polymorphic recursively constrained types, are inferred. These types are expressive enough for typing objects, since they generalize recursive types and F-bounded polymorphism. The well-known tradeoff between inheritance and subtyping is mitigated by the type inference mechanism. We describe an extension of ML with records where inheritance is given by ML generic polymorphism. All common operations on records but concatenation are supported, in particular the free extension of records. Other operations such as renaming of fields are added. The solution relies on an extension of ML, where the language of types is sorted and considered modulo equations, and on a record extension of types. The solution is simple and modular and the type inference algorithm is efficient in practice.

A constrained type is a type that comes with a set of subtyping constraints on variables occurring in the type. Constrained type inference systems are a natural generalization of Hindley/Milner type inference to languages with subtyping. This paper develops several subtyping relations on polymorphic constrained types of a general form that allows recursive constraints and multiple bounds on type variables. We establish a full type abstraction property that equates a novel operational notion of subtyping with a semantic notion based on regular trees. The decidability of this notion of subtyping is open; we present a decidable approximation. Subtyping constrained types has applications to signature matching and to constrained type simplification. We show how the Hindley/Milner polymorphic type system can be extended to incorporate overloading and subtyping. Our approach is to attach constraints to quantified types in order to restrict the allowed instantiations of type variables. We present an algorithm for inferring principal types and prove its soundness and completeness. We find that it is necessary in practice to simplify the inferred types, and we describe techniques for type simplification that involve shape unification, strongly connected components, transitive reduction, and the monotonicities of type formulas.

A subtyping 0 is entailed by a set of subtyping constraints C, written C j= 0 , if every valuation (mapping of type variables to ground types) that satisfies C also satisfies 0 . We study the complexity of subtype entailment for simple types over lattices of base types. We show that: ffl deciding C j= 0 is coNP-complete. ffl deciding C j= ff fi for consistent, atomic C and ff; fi atomic can be done in linear time. The structural lower (coNP-hardness) and upper (membership in coNP) bounds as well as the optimal algorithm for atomic entailment are new. The coNP-hardness result indicates that entailment is strictly harder than satisfiability, which is known to be in PTIME for lattices of base types. The proof of coNP-completeness gives an improved algorithm for deciding entailment and puts a precise complexitytheoretic marker on the intuitive "exponential explosion" in the algorithm. We present # CIL , a typed #-calculus which serves as the foundation for a typed intermediate language for optimizing compilers for higher-order polymorphic programming languages. The key innovation of # CIL is a novel formulation of intersection and union types and flow labels on both terms and types. These flow types can encode polyvariant control and data flow information within a polymorphically typed program representation. Flow types can guide a compiler in generating customized data representations in a strongly typed setting. Since # CIL enjoys confluence, standardization, and subject reduction properties, it is a valuable tool for reasoning about programs and program transformations.
