Assuming that around the tachyon vacuum the kinetic term of cubic open string field theory is made purely of ghost operators we are led to gauge invariant actions which manifestly implement the absence of open string dynamics around this vacuum. We test this proposal by showing the existence of lump solutions of arbitrary codimension in this string field theory. The key ingredients in this analysis are certain assumptions about the analyticity properties of tachyon Green’s functions. With the help of some further assumptions about the properties of these Green’s functions, we also calculate the ratios of tensions of lump solutions of different dimensions. The result is in perfect agreement with the known answers for the ratios of tensions of Dbranes of different dimensions.

We compute oneloop correction to the string field theory action of the tachyon for unstable Dbranes in the framework of the boundary superstring field theory. We would expect that the oneloop correction comes from the partition function of the twodimensional worldsheet theory on the annulus. Although in this level, the general shape of the tachyon potential does not change, the tachyon zero mode dependence is quite complicated. In particular, the genus expansion is not governed by the effective string coupling which is The open string tachyon condensation on nonBPS brane systems has attracted much interest recently. One framework of analysis is level truncation of the open string field theory (SFT) which lead to very good numerical agreements with expected values of vacuum energy and lowerdimensional Dbranes tensions [1, 2].

In fact, there is no contradiction between this approach and the Feynman diagram expansions arising from the tree level effective actions. In the process, we also get some insight on tachyon condensation from the viewpoint of closed string modes and show that there is an instability due to the closed string tachyon in the bosonic case. We study loop corrections in boundary string field theory (BSFT). After commenting on problems with quantizing the tree level BSFT as an ordinary field theory, we discuss the tree level coupling to closed strings and define the loop corrections via factorization in the closed string channel. This description is weakly coupled in the vicinity of the closed string vacuum. Our proposal for the oneloop effective action differs in general from computing the annulus or cylinder partition functions. We also compute the decay rates and the loop corrections to the tensions of unstable branes in perturbative string theory.

We derive effective actions for Spacelike branes (Sbranes) and find a solution describing the formation of fundamental strings in the rolling tachyon background. The Sbrane action is a DiracBornInfeld action for Euclidean worldvolumes defined in the context of timedependent tachyon condensation of nonBPS branes. It includes gauge fields and in particular a scalar field associated with translation along the time direction. We show that the BIon spike solutions constructed in this system correspond to the production of a confined electric flux tube (a fundamental string) at late time of the rolling tachyon.

Abstract: In this paper we construct the 2+1 effective theory of the light states in D2/D4brane system in the context of noncommutative YangMills theory. This effective theory is noncommutative and tachyonic, however, it is not taking the form of an Abelian Higgs model as naively expected. We solve the classical solutions of the effective theory which are nicely corresponding to different states during the tachyon condensation process of the dissolution of D2brane into D4brane. Among these solutions, we find there is none corresponding to D0/D4 configurations which is known to be stable for the selfdual Bfield background.

The present article is based on a previous one, where a second quantized field theory on the world sheet for summing the planar graphs of φ 3 theory was developed. In this earlier work, the ground state of the model was determined using a variational approximation. Here, starting with the same world sheet field theory, we instead use the mean field method to compute the ground state, and find results that are in agreement with the variational calculation. Apart from serving as a check on the variational calculation, the mean field method enables us to go beyond the ground state to compute the excited states of the model. We present a worldvolume effective action suitable for the study of the confined phase of a (Dp, ¯ Dp) system at weak coupling. We identify the mechanism by which the fundamental string arises from this action as a confined electric flux string when the Dp and the Dp ¯ annihilate. We construct an explicit dual action, more suitable for the study of the strong coupling regime, and show that it realizes a generalized HiggsStückelberg phase for the (relative) (p − 2)form field dual to the (overall) BI vector. This is the mechanism put forward by Yi and collaborators based on duality arguments in order to explain the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group at strong coupling. Indeed, in our dual description the Goldstone boson is a (p −3)form magnetically charged with respect to the overall BI vector field. This indicates that the condensing tachyonic objects originate from open D(p −2)branes stretched between the brane and the antibrane. Our results provide an explicit realization of the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group perturbatively, in a way consistent with the duality symmetries
