An approach to abductive inference developed in the TACITUS project has resulted in a dramatic simplification of how the problem of interpreting texts is conceptualized. Its use in solving the local pragmatics problems of reference, compound nominals, syntactic ambiguity, and metonymy is described and illustrated. Statistical language learning research takes the view that many traditional natural language processing tasks can be solved by training probabilistic models of language on a sufficient volume of training data. The design of statistical language learners therefore involves answering two questions: (i) Which of the multitude of possible language models will most accurately reflect the properties necessary to a given task? (ii) What will constitute a sufficient volume of training data? Regarding the first question, though a variety of successful models have been discovered, the space of possible designs remains largely unexplored. Regarding the second, exploration of the design space has so far proceeded without an adequate answer. The goal of this thesis is to advance the exploration of the statistical language learning design space. In pursuit of that goal, the thesis makes two main theoretical contributions: it identifies a new class of designs by providing a novel theory of statistical natural language processing, and it presents the foundations for a predictive theory of data requirements to assist in future design explorations. We consider the problem of assigning probabilistic ratings to hypotheses in a natural language interpretation system. To facilitate integrating syntactic, semantic, and conceptual constraints, we allow a fully compositional frame representation, which permits coindexed syntactic constituents and/or semantic entities filling multiple roles. In addition the knowledge base contains probabilistic information encoded by marginal probabilities on frames. These probabilities are used to specify typicality of realworld scenarios on one hand, and conventionality of linguistic usage patterns on the other. Because the theoretical maximumentropy solution is infeasible in the general case, we propose an approximate method. This method's strengths are (1) its ability to rate compositional structures, and (2) its flexibility with respect to the inputs chosen by the system it is embedded in. Abduction is inference to the best explanation. In the TACITUS project at SRI we have developed an approach to abductive inference, called "weighted abduction", that has resulted in a significant simplification of how the problem of interpreting texts is conceptualized. The interpretation of a text is the minimal explanation of why the text would be true. More precisely, to interpret a text, one must prove the logical form of the text from what is already mutually known, allowing for coercions, merging redundancies where possible, and making assumptions where necessary. It is shown how such "local pragmatics " problems as reference resolution, the interpretation of compound nominals, the resolution of syntactic ambiguity and metonymy, and schema recognition can be solved in this manner. Moreover, this approach of "interpretation as abduction " can be combined with the older view of "parsing as deduction " to produce an elegant and thorough integration of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, one that spans the range of linguistic phenomena from phonology to discourse structure. Finally, we discuss means for making the abduction process efficient, possibilities for extending the approach to other pragmatics phenomena, and the semantics of the weights and costs in the abduction scheme. 1
