Experts from the Robotics Institute were individually interviewed for their insight on interface lessons for fully and semi-autonomous mobile robots. Information was collected on four main themes: challenges, things that seem to work well, things that do not work well, and interface wisdom. The comments were then condensed and pooled into seven high-level categories: safety, remote awareness, control, command inputs, status and state, recovery, and interface design. Classification of expert comments was relatively straightforward in that many interviewees identified consistent material. This suggests that those producing interfaces for fully and semi-autonomous mobile robots should, at the minimum, ensure that they have addressed these broad topics.

Abstract — This paper describes the development activities leading up to field testing of the transit integrated collision warning system, with special attention to the side component. Two buses, one each in California and Pennsylvania, have been outfitted with sensors, cameras, computers, and driver-vehicle interfaces in order to detect threats and generate appropriate warnings. The goal of this experiment was to determine what if any effect two different types of warnings have the brake reaction time of distracted commercial motor vehicle operators. The warning conditions were: No Warning, Auditory Tire Skid Warning, and One Second Brake Pulse Warning. Each participant was distracted via a distracter task during the experiment. As the participants were distracted, an obstacle was launched out into their forward path. Each participant received his/her appropriate warning, according to what condition they were placed, when the obstacle entered their headway. It was determined that the Auditory Tire Skid Warning aided in decreasing the movement times, while the One Second Brake Pulse Warning aided in decreasing the number of collisions with the barrels and speed at contact with the barrels.
