Abstract: We find an explicit relation between the two known ways of generating an infinite set of local conserved charges for the string sigma model on AdS5 × S 5: the Bäcklund and monodromy approaches. We start by constructing the twoparameter family of Bäcklund transformations for the string with an arbitrary worldsheet metric. We then show that only for a special value of one of the parameters the solutions generated by this transformation are compatible with the Virasoro constraints. By solving the Bäcklund equations in a nonperturbative fashion, we finally show that the generating functional of the Bäcklund conservation laws is equal to a certain sum of the quasimomenta. The positions of the quasimomenta in the complex spectral plane are uniquely determined by the real parameter of the Bäcklund transform.

The study of finite J effects for the lightcone AdS5 × S5 superstring by means of the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz requires an understanding of a companion 2d theory which we call the mirror model. It is obtained from the original string model by the double Wick rotation. The Smatrices describing the scattering of physical excitations in the string and mirror models are related to each other by an analytic continuation. We show that the unitarity requirement for the mirror Smatrix fixes the Smatrices of both theories essentially uniquely. The resulting string Smatrix S(z1, z2) satisfies the generalized unitarity condition and, up to a scalar factor, is a meromorphic function on the elliptic curve associated to each variable z. The double Wick rotation is then accomplished by shifting the variables z by quarter of the imaginary period of the torus. We discuss the apparent bound states of the string and mirror models, and show that depending on a choice of the physical region there are one, two or 2M−1 solutions of the Mparticle bound state equations sharing the same conserved charges. For very large but finite values of J, most of these solutions, however, exhibit various signs of pathological behavior. In particular, they

Then we determine the Poisson bracket for Lax connection and we show that this Possion bracket does not depend on the worldsheet metric. We also study the NambuGotto form of this model. We consider a circular string with spin S in AdS5 wrapped around big circle of S 5 and carrying also momentum J. The corresponding N = 4 SYM operator belongs to the SL(2) sector, i.e. has tr(D S Z J) +... structure. The leading large J term in its 1loop anomalous dimension can be computed using Bethe ansatz for the SL(2) spin chain and was previously found to match the leading term in the classical string energy. The string solution is stable at large J, and the Lagrangian for string fluctuations has constant coefficients, so that the 1loop string correction to the energy E1 is given simply by the sum of characteristic frequencies. Curiously, we find that the leading term in the zeromode part of E1 is the same as a 1/J correction to the oneloop anomalous dimension on the gauge theory (spin chain) side that was found in hepth/0410105. However, the contribution of nonzero string modes does not vanish. We also discuss the “fast string ” expansion of the classical string action which coincides with the coherent state action of the SL(2) spin chain at the first order in λ, and extend this expansion to higher orders clarifying the role of the S 5 winding number.

One of the main topics in the modern String Theory are the AdS/CFT dualities. Proving such conjectures is extremely difficult since the gauge and string theory perturbative regimes do not overlap. In this perspective, the discovery of infinitely many conserved charges, i.e. the integrability, in the planar AdS/CFT has allowed us to reach immense progresses in understanding and confirming the duality. We review the fundamental concepts and properties of integrability in twodimensional σmodels and in the AdS/CFT context. The first part is focused on the AdS5/CFT4 duality, especially the classical and quantum integrability of the type IIB superstring on AdS5 × S5 are discussed in both pure spinor and GreenSchwarz formulations. The second part is dedicated to the AdS4/CFT3 duality with particular attention to the type IIA superstring on AdS4 × CP 3 and its integrability. This review is based on a shortened and revised version of the author’s PhD thesis, discussed at Uppsala University in September 2009.

We study a string motion in the LuninMaldacena background, that is, the βdeformed AdS5 × ˜ S 5 background dual to a βdeformation of N = 4 super YangMills theory. For real β we construct a rotating and wound string solution which has two unequal spins in ˜ S 5. The string energy is expressed in terms of the spins, the winding numbers and the deformation parameter. In the expansion of λ/J 2 with the total spin J and the string tension √ λ we present “oneloop ” and “twoloop ” energy corrections. The “oneloop ” one agrees with the oneloop anomalous dimension of the corresponding gaugetheory scalar operators obtained in hepth/0503192 from the βdeformed Bethe equation as well as the anisotropic LandauLifshitz equation.

We construct the complete spectral curve for an arbitrary local operator, including fermions and covariant derivatives, of oneloop N = 4 gauge theory in the thermodynamic limit. This curve perfectly reproduces the Frolov–Tseytlin limit of the full spectral curve of classical strings on AdS5 × S 5 derived in hepth/0502226. To complete the comparison we introduce stacks, novel bound states of roots of different flavors which arise in the thermodynamic limit of the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations. We furthermore show the equivalence of various types of Bethe equations for the underlying su(2, 24) superalgebra, in particular of the type “Beauty” and “Beast”.
