Abstract This paper analyses the effect of competition from low-wage countries on domestic activity, using data on 230 Italian manufacturing sectors between 1995 and 2007. It finds that low-wage import penetration is negatively related to employment and other measures of activity. The effect is significantly smaller in more skill, capital and R&D-intensive sectors and in more vertically differentiated sectors. There is also evidence of significant effects of low-wage competition through inter-industry linkages: employment is negatively related to low-wage import penetration in downstream sectors but positively related to low-wage import penetration in upstream sectors. JEL Classification: F16, F14, L60, D57.

Abstract—Globalisation is a phenomenon that cannot be avoided. As globalisation allowed free flow of inputs including labour, it may affect job opportunities for the locals. Therefore, investigate the determinants of labour supply is essential in understanding the structure of labour market in the new era of globalization. The objective of this article is to examine labour supply by taking into account the globalisation effect. The study covers 3885 households in Peninsular Malaysia who are chosen using stratified random sampling. The labour supply model will be the basis for the analysis. The basic labour supply determinants are own wage and non-labour income. However, the extended labour supply model incorporates other variables like spouse wage, number of children and individuals characteristics like education level and age. Besides, the globalization indicator will also be incorporated as another independent variable. Keywords—globalization, head of households, labour supply, wage I I.

Abstract: Globalisation is a process in which interlink between countries in the world has become more intense and the flow of inputs between one country to another is much easier. In the context of the labour market, the inflow of labor input from foreign countries is more relevant, because it has implications on the local labour, especially the females in terms of job opportunities. This paper attempts to investigate this issue using data from 261 single female headed households in Peninsular Malaysia. The household production model will be the basis for the analysis. In this model, the basic determinants for female labour supply are own wage and non-labour income. However, other variables like family size, children’s age, household’s characteristics and the globalisation indicators will also be incorporated as independent variables. The results show that monthly wage, non-labour income and number of children are significant and positively affect female labour supply, while foreign workers is significantly negative.
