Advanced multimedia applications call for integrated database system support for the management of multimedia data. Traditional database management systems do not provide appropriate concepts and services for the integrated modeling, management, and interactive presentation of multimedia data. Our approach towards a multimedia database management system offers presentation independence to applications, which is in line with traditional database system services like data independence and multiuser support. This new service is realized by the integration of appropriate concepts for continuous object management, the representation and presentation of multimedia data, and the execution of interactive end-user presentations into an open objectoriented database system. The resulting multimedia database system consists of database clients for the interactive presentation of multimedia data, which can be adapted to particular needs of applications, and a database server for the efficient manag...

Declarative query languages are an important feature of database management systems and have played an important role in their success. As database management technology enters the multimedia information system area, the availability of special-purpose query languages for multimedia applications will be equally important. In this report, we survey multimedia query languages and query models. Particularly, we look at those systems from the point of view of well-defined queries, fuzzy queries, visual queries, and query presentations. Several research issues, such as generic multimedia query languages, incremental queries, fuzzy queries, spatio-temporal queries, feature storage and organization, are also identified. In our opinion these are vital issues for the success and development of a multimedia query language.

Although multimedia information technology has become popular, conventional database systems do not offer adequate support for the modeling, indexing, and manipulation of multimedia data. Database management systems need to be extended if they are to handle multimedia information like audio and video. In this paper we present an approach to extend the data model of an object-oriented database programming language by means of a meta-object protocol to implement the classes for multimedia objects. In particular, we model the different multimedia presentations (mostly with different characteristics) of a real-world entity as a single object which plays different roles. Moreover, we also propose different ways of using views to provide the right level of abstraction of the resources and data representation. 1 INTRODUCTION The object-oriented paradigm provides several useful concepts which we can exploit to meet particular requirements [11, 17, 21] of modeling multimedia systems. For exa...

An important issue in multimedia information systems is the lack of models for integrated representation of multimedia objects and applications. Here we discuss various aspects concerning multimedia data modelling. Moreover we propose an object oriented data base model (MOAP - Multimedia Object and Application Model) that aims at representation of multimedia objects and applications. The application representation is based on composition (spatial and temporal) and scenario modelling. An important feature of the MOAP is the approach for integrated modelling of the multimedia objects as well as of the applications. 1 INTRODUCTION - ISSUES IN MULTIMEDIA DATA BASE MODELLING The need for multimedia information systems grows rapidly in a variety of fields including business, manufacturing, education, CAD, CAE, medicine etc. Due to the diverse nature of multimedia data, systems designed to store, transport display and in general, manage such data must have considerably more functionality and...
