A general tool for multichannel and multipath problems is given in FIR matrix algebra. With Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters (or polynomials) assuming the role played by complex scalars in traditional matrix algebra, we adapt standard eigenvalue routines, factorizations, decompositions, and matrix algorithms for use in multichannel /multipath problems. Using abstract algebra/group theoretic concepts, information theoretic principles, and the Bussgang property, methods of single channel filtering and source separation of multipath mixtures are merged into a general FIR matrix framework. Techniques developed for equalization may be applied to source separation and vice versa. Potential applications of these results lie in neural networks with feed-forward memory connections, wideband array processing, and in problems with a multi-input, multi-output network having channels between each source and sensor, such as source separation. Particular applications of FIR polynomial matrix alg...

This article draws on work done in educational psychology to propose a new approach to generating a psychometrically-based measure of second language learners ’ strategic learning, operationalized as their self-regulatory capacity, as an alternative to the scales traditionally used to quantify language learning strategy use. The self-regulation instrument was developed through a three-phase process, focusing on the realm of vocabulary learning. The first phase involved the generation of an item pool, the second a pilot study in a sizeable sample, and the third an evaluation of the psychometric properties of the revised instrument, using confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis. The results show that the proposed instrument has satisfactory psychometric characteristics and that the hypothesized theoretical model had a good fit with the data. We argue that the results provide evidence for the validity of transferring the theoretical construct of self-regulation from educational psychology to the area of second language acquisition. We also propose that instruments targeting learner self-regulation in a similar way to the questionnaire presented in this study can provide a more psychometrically sound measure of strategic learning than traditional language learning strategy scales.

The authors describe the preliminary development and validation of the Authenticity in Relationships Scale. An initial pool of 37 items addressing various elements of the proposed definition of “relationship authenticity ” was administered to 2 independent samples of undergraduates (N 487) who acknowl-edged being in a current romantic relationship. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed that 2 interpretable factors (Unacceptability of Deception, Intimate Risk Taking) effectively represented the data in both samples. Retest data over a 3-month interval were also gathered from a separate independent sample of 121 participants. Subscale scores composed of factor-unique items demonstrated good reliability and test–retest stability, correlated in expected directions with scores on several measures used to establish construct validity, and made unique contributions to the prediction of relationship satisfaction after gender, self-esteem, commitment level, and adult attachment orientations were con-trolled.

For random samples of size n obtained from p-variate normal distributions, we consider the classical likelihood ratio tests (LRT) for their means and covariance matrices in the high-dimensional setting. These test statistics have been extensively studied in multivariate analysis and their limiting distributions under the null hypothesis were proved to be chi-square distributions as n goes to infinity and p remains fixed. In this paper, we consider the high-dimensional case where both p and n go to infinity with p/n → y ∈ (0, 1]. We prove that the likelihood ratio test statistics under this assumption will converge in distribution to normal distributions with explicit means and variances. We perform the simulation study to show that the likelihood ratio tests using our central limit theorems outperform those using the traditional chi-square approximations for analyzing high-dimensional data.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between marital status, marital con-cern, perceived impairment, health-promoting behaviors, and acceptance of disability using cross-sectional and longitudinal data from a sample of persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). We hypothesized that the quality and stability of the marital relationship would influence people’s ability to accept their disability and protect from accumulation of impairment over time. Fur-thermore, men and women would receive dissimilar benefits from marriage. These hypotheses were considered with repeated measures analysis, Pearson correlations, and independent sam-ple t tests of data obtained from a longitudinal study of persons with MS. The findings indicate that acceptance of disability and perceived impairment increase significantly over time for men and women. For men, being married was associated with a greater acceptance of disability and less perceived impairment. Men were more concerned than the women about how MS affected their sexual relationships.

Considerable expenditure on human resource development (HRD) has not necessarily resulted in a significant impact on organizational performance, and research suggests that the failure to transfer learning may be an important explanation. The search for factors affecting transfer has been extensive, as shown in Grossman and Salas’s article in this issue, but, as they also show, more research is needed. The purpose of the present study is to ascertain the views of HRD practitioners (in Ireland) about the factors that they believe are relevant to the transfer of learning in the workplace. The aim is to discover whether practitioners have identified potential factors which researchers have not explored or not explored sufficiently. This group of practitioners was chosen because of the considerable control they wield over significant tranches of organizational resources. The method first involved engagement with 28 senior HRD practitioners in a workshop setting to create a transfer inventory based on their expert opinion. The initial inventory was then responded to online by a group of 314 practitioners indicating the relevance of the items to the question of transfer. Factor analysis was used to achieve parsimony among items, and 21 potential factors were identified. This study focused on the 15 factors adjudged by practitioners to be most relevant. It is concluded that trainer effectiveness, organizational linkage and training event climate, all deemed relevant by practitio-ners, may justify further research.ijtd_374 121..139

We examined the relationship between leader–member exchange (LMX) quality and the attributions subordinates make about their supervisors’ coaching of them. Data were collected from 270 supervisor–subordinate dyads. Subordinates reported that LMX was positively related to attribu-tions that their supervisor’s coaching was for the benefit of subordinates (other-focused interests), and negatively related to attributions that their supervisors ’ coaching was for the benefit of themselves (self-focused interests). Moreover, attributions partially mediated the relationship be-tween LMX quality and both objective and subjective performance with subordinate-attributed supervisors ’ other-focused interests positively re-lated to performance but subordinate-attributed supervisors ’ self-focused interests negatively related to performance.
