Gossip algorithms are attractive for innetwork processing in sensor networks because they do not require any specialized routing, there is no bottleneck or single point of failure, and they are robust to unreliable wireless network conditions. Recently, there has been a surge of activity in the computer science, control, signal processing, and information theory communities, developing faster and more robust gossip algorithms and deriving theoretical performance guarantees. This paper presents an overview of recent work in the area. We describe convergence rate results, which are related to the number of transmittedmessages and thus the amount of energy consumed in the network for gossiping. We discuss issues related to gossiping over wireless links, including the effects of quantization and noise, and we illustrate the use of gossip algorithms for canonical signal processing tasks including distributed estimation, source localization, and compression.

Motivated by applications to wireless sensor, peertopeer, and ad hoc networks, we study distributed broadcasting algorithms for exchanging information and computing in an arbitrarily connected network of nodes. Specifically, we study a broadcastingbased gossiping algorithm to compute the (possibly weighted) average of the initial measurements of the nodes at every node in the network. We show that the broadcast gossip algorithm converges almost surely to a consensus. We prove that the random consensus value is, in expectation, the average of initial node measurements and that it can be made arbitrarily close to this value in mean squared error sense, under a balanced connectivity model and by trading off convergence speed with accuracy of the computation. We provide theoretical and numerical results on the mean square error performance, on the convergence rate and study the effect of the “mixing parameter ” on the convergence rate of the broadcast gossip algorithm. The results indicate that the mean squared error strictly decreases through iterations until the consensus is achieved. Finally, we assess and compare the communication cost of the broadcast gossip algorithm to achieve a given distance to consensus through theoretical and numerical results.

Average consensus consists in the problem of determining the average of some quantities by means of a distributed algorithm. It is a simple instance of problems arising when designing estimation algorithms operating on data produced by sensor networks. Simple solutions based on linear estimation algorithms have already been proposed in the literature and their performance has been analyzed in detail. If the communication links which allow the data exchange between the sensors have some loss, then the estimation performance will degrade. In this contribution the performance degradation due to this data loss is evaluated.

We provide a model to investigate the tension between information aggregation and spread of misinformation in large societies (conceptualized as networks of agents communicating with each other). Each individual holds a belief represented by a scalar. Individuals meet pairwise and exchange information, which is modeled as both individuals adopting the average of their premeeting beliefs. When all individuals engage in this type of information exchange, the society will be able to effectively aggregate the initial information held by all individuals. There is also the possibility of misinformation, however, because some of the individuals are “forceful, ” meaning that they influence the beliefs of (some) of the other individuals they meet, but do not change their own opinion. The paper characterizes how the presence of forceful agents interferes with information aggregation. Under the assumption that even forceful agents obtain some information (however infrequent) from some others (and additional weak regularity conditions), we first show that beliefs in this class of societies converge to a consensus among all individuals. This consensus value is a random variable, however, and we characterize its behavior. Our main results quantify the extent of misinformation in the society by either providing bounds or exact results (in some special cases) on how far the consensus value can be from the benchmark without forceful agents (where there is efficient information aggregation). The worst outcomes obtain when there are several forceful agents and forceful agents themselves update their beliefs only on the basis of information they obtain from individuals most likely to have received their own information previously.

We provide an overview of recent research on belief and opinion dynamics in social networks. We discuss both Bayesian and nonBayesian models of social learning and focus on the implications of the form of learning (e.g., Bayesian vs. nonBayesian), the sources of information (e.g., observation vs. communication), and the structure of social networks in which individuals are situated on three key questions: (1) whether social learning will lead to consensus, i.e., to agreement among individuals starting with different views; (2) whether social learning will effectively aggregate dispersed information and thus weed out incorrect beliefs; (3) whether media sources, prominent agents, politicians and the state will be able to manipulate beliefs and spread misinformation in a society.

We consider the ergodicity and consensus problem for a discretetime linear dynamic model driven by random stochastic matrices, which is equivalent to studying these concepts for the product of such matrices. Our focus is on the model where the random matrices have independent but timevariant distribution. We introduce a new phenomenon, the infinite flow, and we study its fundamental properties and relations with the ergodicity and consensus. The central result is the infinite flow theorem establishing the equivalence between the infinite flow and the ergodicity for a class of independent random models, where the matrices in the model have a common steady state in expectation and a feedback property. For such models, this result demonstrates that the expected infinite flow is both necessary and sufficient for the ergodicity. The result is providing a deterministic characterization of the ergodicity, which can be used for studying the consensus and average consensus over random graphs.

In this paper we study two problems which often occur in various applications arising in wireless sensor networks. These are the problem of reaching an agreement on the value of local variables in a network of computational agents and the problem of cooperative solution to a convex optimization problem, where the objective function is the aggregate sum of local convex objective functions. We incorporate the presence of a random communication graph between the agents in our model as a more realistic abstraction of the gossip and broadcast communication protocols of a wireless network. An added ingredient is the presence of local constraint sets to which the local variables of each agent is constrained. Our model allows for the objective functions to be nondifferentiable and accommodates the presence of noisy communication links and subgradient errors. For the consensus problem we provide a diminishing step size algorithm which guarantees asymptotic convergence. The distributed optimization algorithm uses two diminishing step size sequences to account for communication noise and subgradient errors. We establish conditions on these step sizes under which we can achieve the dual task of reaching consensus and convergence to the optimal set with probability one. In both cases we consider the constant step size behavior of the algorithm and establish asymptotic error bounds.
