The capacitated arc routing problem (CARP) is a challenging combinatorial optimization problem with many real-world applications, e.g., salting route optimization and fleet management. There have been many attempts at solving CARP using heuristic and meta-heuristic approaches, including evolutionary algorithms. However, almost all such attempts formulate CARP as a single-objective problem although it usually has more than one objective, especially considering its real-world applications. This paper studies multiobjective CARP (MO-CARP). A new memetic algorithm (MA) called decomposition-based MA with extended neighborhood search (D-MAENS) is proposed. The new algorithm combines the advanced features from both the MAENS approach for single-objective CARP and multiobjective evolutionary optimization. Our experimental studies have shown that such combination outperforms significantly an off-the-shelf multiobjective evolutionary algorithm, namely nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II, and the state-of-the-art multiobjective algorithm for MO-CARP (LMOGA). Our work has also shown that a specifically designed multiobjective algorithm by combining its single-objective version and multiobjective features may lead to competitive multiobjective algorithms for multiobjective combinatorial optimization problems.

Car navigation equipment in practical use has treated a route planning problem as a single-objective problem. In this paper, we formulate the problem as a dynamic multi-objective problem and show how it can be solved using a GA. There are three objective functions to optimize simultaneously in this problem: route length, travel time that changes rapidly with time, and ease of driving. The proposed method gives the Pareto-optimal set by using both the predicted traffic and a hybrid multi-objective GA (GA + Dijkstra algorithm) so that a driver can choose a favorite route after looking at feasible ones. We give the results of experiments comparing the proposed method with the Dijkstra algorithm and the single-objective GA in applications with a real road map and real traffic data in wide-area road network. Abstract This paper introduces a two-phase sub population genetic algorithm to solve the parallel machine-scheduling problem. In the first phase, the population will be decomposed into many sub-populations and each sub-population is designed for a scalar multi-objective. Subpopulation is a new approach for solving multi-objective problems by fixing each sub-population for a pre-determined criterion. In the second phase, non-dominant solutions will be combined after the first phase and all sub-population will be unified as one big population. Not only the algorithm merges sub-populations but the external memory of Pareto solution is also merged and updated. Then, one unified population with each chromosome search for a specific weighted objective during the next evolution process. The two phase sub-population genetic algorithm is applied to solve the parallel machine-scheduling problems in testing of the efficiency and efficacy. Experimental results are reported and the superiority of this approach is discussed. q

This chapter presents ParadisEO-MOEO, a white-box object-oriented software framework dedicated to the flexible design of metaheuristics for multi-objective optimization. This paradigm-free software proposes a unified view for major evolutionary multi-objective metaheuristics. It embeds some features and techniques for multi-objective resolution and aims to provide a set of classes allowing to ease and speed up the development of computa-tionally efficient programs. It is based on a clear conceptual distinction between the solution methods and the problems they are intended to solve. This separation confers a maximum design and code reuse. This general-purpose framework provides a broad range of fitness assignment strategies, the most common diversity preservation mechanisms, some elitist-related features as well as statistical tools. Furthermore, a number of state-of-the-art search methods, including NSGA-II, SPEA2 and IBEA, have been implemented in a user-friendly way, based on the fine-grained ParadisEO-MOEO components.

Abstract—In this paper a new approach is proposed for the adaptation of the simulated annealing search in the field of the Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO). This new approach is called Multi-Case Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing (MC-MOSA). It uses some basics of a well-known recent Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing proposed by Ulungu et al., which is referred in the literature as U-MOSA. However, some drawbacks of this algorithm have been found, and are substituted by other ones, especially in the acceptance decision criterion. The MC-MOSA has shown better performance than the U-MOSA in the numerical experiments. This performance is further improved by some other subvariants of the MC-MOSA, such as Fast-annealing MC-MOSA, Re-annealing MC-MOSA and the Two-Stage annealing MC-MOSA. Keywords—Simulated annealing, multi-objective optimization, acceptance decision criteria, re-annealing, two-stage annealing. I.
