A multi-scale technique for shape description of spinal cord atrophy occurring in patients with Multiple Sclerosis is presented which allows for quantitative and qualitative shape measurements across scales. At large scales, the global shape of the cord is captured, resembling an ellipse, while at lower scales more subtle deformations caused by lesions can be detected. The degree of the shape change in scale space is used as a shape metric, providing meaningful information in the process of determining the degree of atrophy. Introduction Spinal cord atrophy has been observed in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Recent studies performed at the Institute of Neurology at Queen Square, London [1], have demonstrated that there is a strong correlation between spinal cord atrophy and clinical disability. Further study on how the pathology in the spinal cord...
