Abstract. We propose a new conceptual model for choreographies of web-services. Choreographies are seen as virtual workflow models shared among participants. Subsets of these participants might have more refined models known only to them. So we see choreographies actually as federations of process models (choreographies as well as orchestrations). In this paper we discuss this layered concept, and present a metamodel with the following distinguishing features: It is fully distributed and does not require a central or global authority. It captures the control flow and the data flow aspects of the processes. Choreography models can be (re)used in several other choreographies. Additionally, we provide a procedure which checks whether choreographies fit together, i.e. the conformance of the federation relationship between models.

Abstract. Workflow management systems are very useful for integrat-ing separately developed application systems by controlling flows of exe-cution. For various purposes (e.g. distribution of activities, workflow evo-lution, time calculation, etc.) it is necessary to change the representation of a workflow, the structure of a workflow graph without changing it’s semantics. We provide an equivalence definition of workflow graphs and introduce a set of basic transformation operations defined on workflow graphs which keep the semantics. We show how these basic operations can be combined to achieve complex transformations and briefly describe a prototypical transformation tool. 1

Abstract. In this paper we present the BPAL platform that includes a logic-based language for business process (BP) modeling and a reasoning mechanism providing support for several tasks. Firstly, the definition of a BP meta-model (MM) consisting of a set of rules that guide the BP designers in their work. Secondly, given a BP, the BPAL platform allows for the automatic verification of the compliance (well-formedness) of a given BP w.r.t. the defined MM. Finally, the execution semantics of a BP is given in term of its instances (referred to as traces) to provide services for i) checking if the actual execution of a BP has been carried out in accordance with the corresponding definition, ii) simulating executions by trace generation. The proposed platform is open since it can easily be enhanced by adding other logic-based modeling, reasoning, and querying functionalities.

Abstract. Workflows are computational representations of business processes. When workflows are changed, a strategy for dealing with actual running workflow instances is needed, since workflows are typically longrunning processes. As the basic strategies abort and flush are rarely applicable, hybrid workflow schemas have to be defined (transitional provisions) for the continuation of these instances. In this paper we focus on workflow evolutions where merely the order and parallelism of activities are changed and present a technique for generating a manifold of hybrid workflows based on control flow and data flow analysis. 1

Abstract Context: A distributed business process is executed in a distributed computing environment. The service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm is a popular option for the integration of software services and execution of distributed business processes. Entailment constraints, such as mutual exclusion and binding constraints, are important means to control process execution. Mutually exclusive tasks result from the division of powerful rights and responsibilities to prevent fraud and abuse. In contrast, binding constraints define that a subject who performed one task must also perform the corresponding bound task(s). Objective: We aim to provide a model-driven approach for the specification and enforcement of task-based entailment constraints in distributed servicebased business processes. Method: Based on a generic metamodel, we define a domain-specific language (DSL) that maps the different modeling-level artifacts to the implementation-level. The DSL integrates elements from role-based access control (RBAC) with the tasks that are performed in a business process. Process definitions are annotated using the DSL, and our software platform uses automated model transformations to produce executable WS-BPEL specifications which enforce the entailment constraints. We evaluate the impact of constraint enforcement on runtime performance for five selected service-based processes from existing literature. Results: Our evaluation demonstrates that the approach correctly enforces task-based entailment constraints at runtime. The performance experiments illustrate that the runtime enforcement operates with an overhead that scales well up to the order of several ten thousand logged invocations. Using our DSL annotations, the user-defined process definition remains declarative and clean of security enforcement code. Conclusion: Our approach decouples the concerns of (non-technical) domain experts from technical details of entailment constraint enforcement. The developed framework integrates seamlessly with WS-BPEL and the Web services technology stack. Our prototype implementation shows the feasibility of the approach, and the evaluation points to future work and further performance optimizations.

In the event of a disaster in Germany a so-called executive staff is set up. In support of their work they refer to emergency plans, which describe the chronological order of a set of suitable measures for a dedicated event e.g. an evacuation. These plans only exist in the form of large printed documents. Hence, the technical support for executing emergency plans is very limited. In this paper we present a model for a workflow management system (WfMS) for supporting the modeling, execution and management of emergency plans before and during a disaster. It is based on the idea that emergency plans are similar to business processes and can therefore be modeled as workflows. In contrast to most traditional WfMS, the introduced approach supports unstructured activities and their delegation as well as the management of resources. Furthermore, we analyze drawbacks of the current process for disaster management using emergency plans.

Finally, the execution semantics of a BP is given in term of its instances (referred to as traces) to provide two basic services; checking if an execution of a BP has been carried out in accordance with the corresponding definition (process log analysis); simulating possible executions by automatic traces generation. The proposed platform is open since the meta-model can be easily modified to codify different classes of BP, to comply with specific needs of an enterprise.
