A pedagogical and self-contained introduction to noncommutative quantum field theory is presented, with emphasis on those properties that are intimately tied to string theory and gravity. Topics covered include the Weyl-Wigner correspondence, noncommutative Feynman diagrams, UV/IR mixing, noncommutative Yang-Mills theory on infinite space and on the torus, Morita equivalences of noncommutative gauge theories, twisted reduced models, and an in-depth study of the gauge group of noncommutative Yang-Mills theory. Some of the more mathematical ideas and

We review the generalization of field theory to space-time with noncommuting coordinates, starting with the basics and covering most of the active directions of research. Such theories are now known to emerge from limits of M theory and string theory, and to describe quantum Hall states. In the last few years they have been studied intensively, and many qualitatively new phenomena have been discovered, both on the classical and quantum level. Submitted to Reviews of Modern Physics.

In these lecture notes we describe recent progress in our understanding of attractor mechanism and entropy of extremal black holes based on the entropy function formalism. We also describe precise computation of the microscopic degeneracy of a class of quarter BPS dyons in N = 4 supersymmetric string theories, and compare the statistical entropy of these dyons, expanded in inverse powers of electric and magnetic charges, with a similar expansion of the corresponding black hole entropy. This comparison is extended to include the contribution to the entropy from multi-centered black holes as well.

The geometric Langlands program can be described in a natural way by compactifying on a Riemann surface C a twisted version of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. The key ingredients are electric-magnetic duality of gauge theory, mirror symmetry of sigma-models, branes, Wilson and ’t Hooft operators, and topological field theory. Seemingly esoteric notions of the geometric Langlands program, such as Hecke

Using string field theory, we argue that the tachyon potential on a D-brane anti-D-brane system in type II string theory in arbitrary background has a universal form, independent of the boundary conformal field theory describing the brane. This implies that if at the minimum of the tachyon potential the total energy of the brane antibrane system vanishes in a particular background, then it vanishes in any other background. Similar result holds for the tachyon potential of the non-BPS D-branes of type II string theory, and the D-branes of bosonic string theory. 1

We give new examples of noncommutative manifolds that are less standard than the NC-torus or Moyal deformations of R n. They arise naturally from basic considerations of noncommutative differential topology and have non-trivial global features. The new examples include the instanton algebra and the NC-4-spheres S4 θ. We construct the noncommutative algebras A = C ∞ (S4 θ) of functions on NCspheres as solutions to the vanishing, chj(e) = 0,j < 2, of the Chern character in the cyclic homology of A of an idempotent e ∈ M4(A), e2 = e, e = e ∗. We describe the universal noncommutative space obtained from this equation as a noncommutative Grassmanian as well as the corresponding notion of admissible morphisms. This space Gr contains the suspension of a NC-3-sphere intimately related to quantum group deformations SUq(2) of SU(2) but for unusual values (complex values of modulus one) of the parameter q of q-analogues, q = exp(2πiθ). We then construct the noncommutative geometry of S4 θ as given by a spectral triple (A, H,D) and check all axioms of noncommutative manifolds. In a previous paper it was shown that for any Riemannian metric gµν on S4 whose volume form √ g d4x is the same as the one for the round metric, the corresponding Dirac operator gives a solution to the following quartic equation, e − 1

We review the theory of higher spin gauge fields in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter space and present some new results on the structure of higher spin currents and explicit solutions of the massless equations. A previously obtained d=3 integrating flow is generalized to d=4 and is shown to give rise to a perturbative solution of the d=4 nonlinear higher spin equations. A particular attention is paid to the relationship between the star-product origin of the higher spin symmetries, AdS geometry and the concept of space-time locality.

A new version of scale analysis and renormalization theory has been found on the non-commutative Moyal space. It could be useful for physics beyond the standard model or for standard physics in strong external field. The good news is that quantum field theory is better behaved on non-commutative than on ordinary space: indeed it has no Landau ghost. Noncommutativity might therefore be an alternative to supersymmetry. We review this rapidly growing subject.

Abstract: We propose a new mechanism for obtaining de Sitter vacua in type IIB string theory compactified on (orientifolded) Calabi-Yau manifolds similar to those recently studied by Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT). dS vacuum appears in KKLT model after uplifting an AdS vacuum by adding an anti-D3-brane, which explicitly breaks supersymmetry. We accomplish the same goal by adding fluxes of gauge fields within the D7-branes, which induce a D-term potential in the effective 4D action. In this way we obtain dS space as a spontaneously broken vacuum from a purely supersymmetric 4D action. We argue that our approach can be directly extended to heterotic string vacua, with the dilaton potential obtained from a combination of gaugino condensation and the D-terms generated by anomalous U(1) gauge groups. 1

We review the recent studies of tachyon condensation in string field theory. After introducing the open string field theory both for bosonic string and for superstring, we use them to examine the conjecture that the unstable configurations of the D-brane will decay into the ‘closed string vacuum ’ through the tachyon condensation. And we describe the attemps to construct a lower dimensional bosonic D-brane as an unstable lump solution of the string field equation. We obtain exact results from another formulation, background independent open string field theory. We also discuss some other topics which are related to tachyon condensation in string theory, such as the construction of a D-brane as a noncommutative soliton
