This rel'iell ' rakes a closer look at this common presumption by placing the issue in historical con text and then focusing attention 011 mathematics achievement. This project examines the effects of the introduction of small schools in the Chicago Public School (CPS) district on student performance. Specifically, we investigate whether students attending small schools have higher achievement and graduation/enrollment rates than similar students who attend a regular CPS school. To address the selection problem, we use an instrumental variables approach and compare students who live in different neighborhoods with similar characteristics as measured by local employment, poverty rates, and so on. In this approach, one student was more likely to sign up for a small school than another statistically identical student because the small school was located closer to the student’s house and therefore the “cost ” of attending the school as measured by commuting time is lower. The distance‐to‐small‐school variable has strong predictive power to identify who attends a small school. We find that small schools students are substantially more likely to persist in school and eventually graduate. Nonetheless, there is no consistent measurable impact on student achievement as measured by test scores. It looks like the students who attend small schools come in performing slightly worse on standardized tests than those who attend regular high schools, and small schools do not appear to substantially improve their performance on these measures. The finding of no test score improvement but a strong improvement along other dimensions is consistent with a growing literature that suggests that interventions aimed at older children can improve their non‐cognitive skills but do little to improve their cognitive skills.

ii In this study, the researcher examined the strength and direction of relationships between New Jersey School Report Card Variables, in particular Faculty Mobility, and 2009-2010 New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) Math and Language Arts Literacy test scores. Variables found to have an influence on standardized test scores in the extant literature were evaluated and reported. Analyses of simultaneous multiple regressions involving New Jersey School Report Card Variables were conducted for both Math and Language Arts Literacy scores. Hierarchical regression models including only variables deemed significant by the multiple linear regressions were analyzed for both Math and Language Arts Literacy scores. The sample was selected purposefully to represent only New Jersey‘s public, comprehensive, and academic secondary schools.

The relationship between human capital and economic growth is highly acclimatized by the quality and distribution of education in the labor force. However, to realize this issue it is important to focus on the base of education at the school level. There is evidence that environmental positions affect students ’ performance. The study was conducted using field research. Interviews and surveys were conducted with 229 administers located at three directorates of the North Badia region. Subjects were selected using stratified random sampling. Results indicated that education at Mafraq Governorate lacks quality and quantity of supply as it is located away from urban centers. Over all perceived performance was affected differently in the three directorates of North Badia; the highest perceived performance was in Central Mafraq and the least in Northeast Badia. This study empirically assessed the relationship between school size and academic achievement of elementary school students in Ontario, Canada. Utilizing data from the Ontario provincial standardized test, the Educational Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), the results of 541 schools from ten school boards, were studied. A One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicated that overall, there was no statistically significant correlation between school size and student achievement. However, there were significant correlations with respect to levels of performance in both Grades three and six in some curricular areas. Also, further analysis at each independent achievement level revealed that the mean percentage of students achieving at stipulated provincial standards in Grade three writing and in Grade six reading, writing and mathematics were highest in large-sized schools (schools with more than 420 students). Results further indicated that the mean percentage of students performing above provincial standards in Grade six reading and writing was also highest in large schools. Students in me-dium-sized schools (between 246 and 420 students) also had the highest mean percentage of students performing above provincial standards in Grade three writing and in Grade six mathematics. The limitations and implica-tions of the results are discussed, and relevant suggestions made.
