An Electronically Tunable Resonator for Noise Control

by Clark J. Radcliffe, Charles Birdsong , 2001
"... Many engineering systems create unwanted noise that can be reduced by the careful application of engineering noise controls. When this noise travels down tubes and pipes, a tuned resonator can be used to muffle noise escaping from the tube. The classical examples are automobile exhaust and ventilati ..."

noise with time-varying frequency. The electronically tunable Semi-active Helmholtz Resonator (SHR) is a novel noise control device that includes a combination of conventional acoustic components combined with a hybrid control system. This device can be fully designed externally and attached to a

Attenuation Performance of a Semi-Active Helmholtz Resonator in a Grazing Flow Duct

by Xiaofeng Shi , Ming Cheuk , Mak , Jun Yang , 2013
"... ABSTRACT Side branch Helmholtz resonators (HRs) are widely used to control low frequency tonal noise in air duct system. The passive Helmholtz resonator only works effectively over a narrow frequency range around resonance frequency. Changes in the exciting frequency and temperature will decrease t ..."

low Mach number air flow, the discontinuity condition at the joint is analytically formulated according to the conservation of the momentum and mass of air flow. Based on the transfer function at the junction, a controller function is proposed to tune the semi-active Helmholtz resonator under flow

Nonlinear Neural Networks: Principles, Mechanisms, and Architectures

by Stephen Grossberg , 1988
"... An historical discussion is provided of the intellectual trends that caused nineteenth century interdisciplinary studies of physics and psychobiology by leading scientists such as Helmholtz, Maxwell, and Mach to splinter into separate twentieth-century scientific movements. The nonlinear, nonstatio ..."

Key properties of shunting competitive feedback networks are summarized, including the role of sigmoid signalling, automatic gain control, competitive choice and quantization, tunable filtering, total activity normalization, and noise

Tunable Active Vibration Absorber: The Delayed

by Nejat Olgac, Brian Holm-hansen
"... This paper elaborates upon a novel concept, the Delayed Resonator, a tunable active vibration absorber. This technique uses a control which has a time delayed feedback of the absorber mass displacement. The substance of this process is in that the absorber completely removes oscillations from the pr ..."

The Flow Reversal Resonator

by Mikael Karlsson, Ragnar Glav , 2007
"... Copyright © 2007 SAE International The flow reversal chamber is a commonly used element in practical silencer design. To lower its fundamental eigenfrequency, it is suggested to acoustically short circuit the inlet and outlet duct. In the low frequency limit such a configuration will correspond to a ..."

Towards an Autonomous Self-Tuning Vibration Energy Harvesting Device for Wireless Sensor Network Applications. Smart Materials and Structures,

by Vinod R Challa , M G Prasad , Frank T Fisher , 250
"... Abstract Future deployment of wireless sensor networks will ultimately require a self-sustainable local power source for each sensor, and vibration energy harvesting is a promising approach for such applications. A requirement for efficient vibration energy harvesting is to match the device and sou ..."

Since the magnetic force tuning technique is semi-active, energy is only consumed during the tuning process. The developed prototype consumed maximum energies of 3.3 and 3.9 J to tune

Ultracold atoms in optical lattices provide a highly control-lable environment for the clean experimental realization of various model Hamiltonians from condensed matter and statistical physics. For example, the two-component Bose-Hubbard model, which re-duces to an anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in a certain limit and thus allows for the study of quantum magnetism, can be im-plemented by using bosons with two different internal states that couple differently to an optical lattice potential. In this thesis, I present our first experiments with two-component hyperfine-state mixtures of ultracold 87Rb atoms in a state-dependent optical lat-tice, both in the strongly correlated regime and in the context of nonlinear atom optics. For the production of 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensates we have developed a moving-coil transporter apparatus featuring a mag-netic TOP trap which serves as a “phase-space funnel ” to load a
