This paper describes the design of a pattern matcher for a knowledge representation system called LOOM. The pattern matcher has a very rich patternforming language, and is logicbased, with a deductive mechanism which includes a truthmaintenance component as an integral part of the patternmatching logic. The technology behind the LOOM matcher uses an inference engine called a classifier to perform the matches. The LOOM matcher is more expressive and more complete than previous classi cationbased patternmatchers, and is expected to be significantly more efficient.

We present a new distributed connectionist model of the perception of spoken words. The model employs a representatio n of speech that combines lexical information with abstract phonological information, with lexical access modelled as a direct mapping onto this single distributed representatio n. We rst examine the integration of partial cues to phonological identity, showing that the model provides a sound basis for simulating phonetic and lexical decision data from MarslenWilson and Warren (1994). We then investigate the time course of lexical access, and argue that the process of competition between word candidates during lexical access can be interpreted in terms of interference between distributed lexical representatio ns. The relation between our model and other models of spoken word recognition is discussed.

Biholomorphic maps between Teichmüller spaces

The first main result in this paper is the following classification theorem. If M and N are two Riemann surfaces that are not of exceptional type, and if t ..."

, and if there exists a biholomorphic map between the corresponding Teichmüller spaces Teich(M) and Teich(N), then M and N are quasiconformally related. Also, every such biholomorphic map is geometric. In particular, we have that every automorphism of the Teichmüller space Teich(M) must be geometric. This result

Class A systems are reasonably described by MPn theory, which is re ¯ ected by the fact that convergence
