One key to improving high-performance computing (HPC) productivity is finding better ways to measure it. We define productivity in terms of mission goals, i.e., greater productivity means that more science is accomplished with less cost and effort. Traditional software productivity metrics and computing benchmarks have proven inadequate for assessing or predicting such end-to-end productivity. In this paper we describe a new approach to measuring productivity in HPC applications that addresses both development time and execution time. Our goal is to develop a public repository of effective productivity benchmarks that anyone in the HPC community can apply to assess or predict productivity 1.

In this paper, we describe TSOtool, a program to check the behavior of the memory subsystem in a shared memory multiprocessor. TSOtool runs pseudo-randomly generated programs with data races on a system compliant with the Total Store Order (TSO) memory consistency model; it then checks the results of the program against the formal TSO specification. Such analysis can expose subtle memory errors like data corruption, atomicity violation and illegal instruction ordering. While verifying TSO compliance completely is an NPcomplete problem, we describe a new polynomial time algorithm which is incorporated in TSOtool. In spite of being incomplete, it has been successful in detecting several bugs in the design of commercial microprocessors and systems, during both pre-silicon and post-silicon phases of validation.

This document defines two extensions (Select and Sort) for the Service Location Protocol (SLP). These extensions allow a User Agent (UA) to request that the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) entries in a Service Reply (SrvRply) be limited to the specified number, or be sorted according to the specified sort key list. Using these two extensions together can facilitate discovering the best match, such as finding a service that has the maximum speed or the minimum load. 1.

/etc consulting DISP is a practical client-server protocol for the distributed storage of immutable data objects. Unlike most other contemporary protocols, DISP permits applications to make explicit tradeoffs between total storage space, computational overhead, and guarantees of availability, integrity, and privacy on a per-object basis. Applications specify the degree of redundancy with which each item is encoded, what level of integrity checks are computed and stored with each item, and whether items are stored in an encrypted format. At one extreme, clients willing to pay the overhead are guaranteed privacy, integrity, and availability of data stored in the system as long as fewer than half the servers are Byzantine. At the other extreme, objects that do not require privacy or integrity in the face of Byzantine servers can be stored with very low computational and storage overhead. DISP is efficient in terms of message count, message size, and storage requirements: even in the worst case, the read and write protocols require a number of messages that are linear with respect to the number of servers. In terms of message size, DISP requires transferring only marginally more than L bytes to correctly read an object of size L, even in the face of Byzantine server failures. In this article we provide a description of DISP and an analysis of its fault-tolerant properties. We also analyze the complexity of the protocol and discuss several potential applications. We conclude with a description of our prototype implementation and measurements of its performance on commodity hardware.
