Leprosy is a chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae that affects the periph-eral nerves, skin, and potentially other organs [1–5]. Although the worldwide prevalence of leprosy has decreased in the era of multi-drug therapy (MDT), the global detection of new cases of leprosy remains a concern, with more than 250,000 new cases of leprosy reported in 2007 [3]. The precise mechanism of transmission of leprosy has not been conclusively defined; however, it is likely that this occurs through respiratory secre-tions by untreated borderline lepromatous and polar lepromatous cases [1,5]. Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Gas of Sodium Atoms

by K B Davis , M.-O Mewes , M R Andrews , N J Van Druten , D S Durfee , D M Kurn , W Ketterle , 1995
"... We have observed Bose-Einstein condensation of sodium atoms. The atoms were trapped in a novel trap that employed both magnetic and optical forces. Evaporative cooling increased the phase-space density by 6 orders of magnitude within seven seconds. Condensates contained up to 5 3 10 5 atoms at dens ..."

at densities exceeding 10 14 cm 23 . The striking signature of Bose condensation was the sudden appearance of a bimodal velocity distribution below the critical temperature of ϳ 2 mK. The distribution consisted of an isotropic thermal distribution and an elliptical core attributed to the expansion of a dense

Dynamics of an expanding circular fault

by Raul Madariaga - Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am , 1976
"... We study a plane circular model of a frictional fault using numerical methods. The model is dynamic since we specify the effective stress at the fault. In one model we assume that the fault appears instantaneously in the medium; in another, that the rupture nucleates at the center and that rupture p ..."

When Capital Inflows Come to a Sudden Stop: Consequences and Policy Options”, mimeo

by Guillermo A. Calvo, Carmen M. Reinhart , 1999
"... In this paper we present evidence that capital account reversals have become more severe for emerging markets. Because policy options are limited in the midst of a capital market crisis and because so many countries have already had crises recently, we focus on some of the policies that could reduce ..."

reduce the incidence of crises in the first place, or at least make the sudden stop problem less severe. In this regard, we consider the relative merits of capital controls and dollarization. We conclude that, while the evidence suggests that capital controls appear to influence the composition of flows

Childhood traumas: An outline and overview

by Lenore C. Terr - The American Journal of Psychiatry , 1991

Foreground Silhouettes Extraction robust to Sudden Changes of background Appearance

by Re Alahi, Luigi Bagnato, Damien Matti, Pierre V - In IEEE International conference on Image Processing , 2012
"... Vision-based background subtraction algorithms model the intensity variation across time to classify a pixel as foreground. Unfortunately, such algorithms are sensitive to appearance changes of the background such as sudden changes of illumination or when videos are projected in the background. In t ..."

Our Eyes Do Not Always Go Where We Want Them To Go: Capture Of The Eyes By New Objects

by Jan Theeuwes, Arthur F. Kramer, Sowon Hahn, David E. Irwin , 1998
"... Observers make rapid eye movements to examine the world around them. Before an eye movement is made, attention is covertly shifted to the location of the object of interest. The eyes typically will land at the position at which attention is directed. Here we report that a goal-directed eye movement ..."

It is well-known that the visual system is sensitive to events that exhibit sudden change (Breitmeyer & Ganz, 1976). When a person
