At the end of a thoughtful article on the future of nuclear war, Wiesner and York (1) concluded that: “Both sides in the arms race are... confronted by the dilemma of steadily increasing military power and steadily decreasing national security. It is our considered professional judgment that this dilemma has no technical solution. If the great powers continue to look for solutions in the area of science and technology only, the result will be to worsen the situation.” I would like to focus your attention not on the subject of the article (national security in a nuclear world) but on the kind of conclusion they reached, namely that there
Common Risk Factors in the Returns On Stocks And Bonds
 Journal of Financial Economics

The struggle to govern the commons

Locally evolved institutional arrangements governed by stable communities and buffered from outside forces have sustained resources successfully for centuries, although they often fail when rapid change occu ..."

In 1968, Hardin (1) drew attention to two human factors that drive environmental change. The first factor is the increasing de

The specificities of 28 commercially available compounds reported to be relatively selective inhibitors of particular serine threoninespecific protein kinases have been examined against a large panel of protein kinases. The compounds KT 5720, Rottlerin and quercetin were found to inhibit many protein kinases, sometimes much more potently than their presumed targets, and conclusions drawn from their use in cellbased experiments are likely to be erroneous. Ro 318220 and related bisindoylmaleimides, as well as H89, HA1077 and Y 27632, were more selective inhibitors, but still inhibited two or more protein kinases with similar potency. LY 294002 was found to inhibit casein kinase2 with similar potency to phosphoinositide (phosphatidylinositol) 3kinase. The compounds with the most
The relationship between return and market value of common stocks
 Journal of Financial Economics
, 1981
"... This study examines the empirical relattonship between the return and the total market value of NYSE common stocks. It is found that smaller firms have had htgher risk adjusted returns, on average, than larger lirms. This ‘size effect ’ has been in existence for at least forty years and is evidence ..."

Factor Graphs and the SumProduct Algorithm
 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INFORMATION THEORY

Knowledge and Common Knowledge in a Distributed Environment
 Journal of the ACM

"... : Reasoning about knowledge seems to play a fundamental role in distributed systems. Indeed, such reasoning is a central part of the informal intuitive arguments used in the design of distributed protocols. Communication in a distributed system can be viewed as the act of transforming the system&apo ..."

Factoring polynomials with rational coefficients
 MATH. ANN

In this paper we present a polynomialtime algorithm to solve the following problem: given a nonzero polynomial fe Q[X] in one variable with rational coefficients, find the decomposition of f into irreducible factors in Q[X]. polynomials feZ[X] into irreducible factors in Z[X]. Here we call f ~ Z[X] primitive if the greatest common divisor of its coefficients (the content of f) is 1. Our algorithm performs well in practice, cf. [8]. Its running time, measured in bit operations, is O(nl2+n9(log[fD3). Here f~Tl[X] is the polynomial
FAST VOLUME RENDERING USING A SHEARWARP FACTORIZATION OF THE VIEWING TRANSFORMATION
