tions and helpful criticism. Special thanks go to Dr. James L. Smith for his contin-ual support and encouragement throughout the study. In addition, the author is grateful to Mr. T. M. DeLa-Cruz for the maintenance of the equipment, and to the stu-dents who participated in the experiment. i 1 The primary objectives of the study were: 1. Study the effects of the psychophysically determined Max-imum Acceptable Weight Of Lift (MAWOL) of individuals over extended periods. 2. Study the effects of the physiological responses (oxygen consumption and heart rate) over extended periods, with the weight lifted was constant. 3. Development of prediction equations for MAWOL. 4. Comparison of lifting capacity of individuals using the psychophysical and physiological approaches. To accomplish this a laboratory study was conducted using 12 male subjects. Following a familiarization period, the sub-jects performed two psychophysical lifting tasks consisting of a floor to 30 inch lift at 2 and 8 lifts/minute. The sub-jects lifted the MAWOL at the two frequencies for an eight hour period when: (1) MAWOL was adjusted over the eight hours, (2) MAWOL being constant. Oxygen consumption and heart rate were measured every hour for eight hours. Results indicated that the MAWOL decreased on the average to 85.97 % of MAWOL, with the decrement to 88.32 % of

This dissertation is concerned with the study of non-Markovian queueing systems and networks, with applications to communication networks. The main contribution of the dissertation consists in deriving results for non-Markovian networks that have been obtained so far only for Markovian queueing networks. We study large closed client/server communication networks and losses in single-server queueing systems, with an application to communication networks of loss queues. We apply stochastic calculus and the theory of martingales to the case when one of the client stations is a bottleneck in the limit, where the total number of tasks in the server increases to infinity. The main results of this study are (i) an explicit expression for the interrelation between the limiting non-stationary distributions in non-bottleneck client stations; thus when one distribution is found in a simulation, the others can be computed; (ii) derivation of diffusion and fluid approximations for the non-Markovian queue length in the bottleneck client station. For the loss networks considered, we find an asymptotic expression for the loss probability and
