Fundamental Limits of Multipath Aided Serial Search Acquisition

by Watcharapan Suwansantisuk, Student Member, Moe Z. Win
"... Abstract — Spread-spectrum systems with large transmission bandwidth present significant challenges from the standpoint of achieving acquisition before the communication commences. This tutorial summarizes our recent results on acquisition system that exploits multipath to aid the synchronization. I ..."

. In particular, we consider the serial-search strategy and the optimal search procedure to examine the uncertainty space. We derive a lower bound and an upper bound for the mean acquisition times (MATs) over all possible search procedures. These expressions give fundamental limits of the MATs. We then prove

Serial search and comparison of features of imagined and perceived objects

by Lawrence M. Parsons
"... Four experiments studied the spatial information processing involved in making a series of same-different comparisons of features of two objects. When the path between successively compared features on one object was antiparallel with the corresponding path on the other, comparison of a series of fe ..."

for processes or processing resources, or may produce interfering cross-talk between the spatial information processing of the concurrent search tasks. Because of incongruity, as demonstrated in this study, serial search of objects at different orientations is difficult. To determine that two objects

Controlled and automatic human information processing

by Walter Schneider, Richard M. Shiffrin - I. Detection, search, and attention. Psychological Review , 1977
"... A two-process theory of human information processing is proposed and applied to detection, search, and attention phenomena. Automatic processing is activa-tion of a learned sequence of elements in long-term memory that is initiated by appropriate inputs and then proceeds automatically—without subjec ..."

mechanisms. Automatic detection is shown to develop following consistent mapping of stimuli to responses over trials. Controlled search is utilized in varied-mapping paradigms, and in our studies, it takes the form of serial, terminating search. The approach resolves a number of apparent conflicts

Detecting conjunctions of color and form: Reassessing the serial search hypothesis

by Harold Pashler - Perception and Psychophysics , 1987
"... Treisman and Gelade (1980), who had subjects search for conjunctions of color and form, observed that the slope relating reaction times to number of items in the display was twice as steep for negative (target absent) responses as for positive responses. This result is widely accepted as evidence th ..."

that a serial selfterminating search is necessary to detect conjunctions. In Experiment 1 of the present study, the subjects searched for a conjunction target (a green T) in displays of 2, 4, or 8 items. Positive and negative displaysize slopes were essentially the same in this range. In Experiment 2

An almost ideal demand system.

by Angus Deaton , John Muellbauer - American Economic Review, , 1980
"... Ever since Richard Stone (1954) first estimated a system of demand equations derived explicitly from consumer theory, there has been a continuing search for alternative specifications and functional forms. Many models have been proposed, but perhaps the most important in current use, apart from the ..."

Guided search: an alternative to the Feature Integration Model for visual search

by Jeremy M. Wolfe, Kyle R. Cave, Susan L. Franzel - Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception & Performance , 1989
"... Subjects searched sets of items for targets defined by conjunctions of color and form, color and orientation, or color and size. Set size was varied and reaction times (RT) were measured. For many unpracticed subjects, the slopes of the resulting RT x Set Size functions are too shallow to be consist ..."

to be consistent with Treisman's feature integration model, which proposes serial, self-terminating search for conjunctions. Searches for triple conjunctions (Color x Size x Form) are easier than searches for standard conjunctions and can be independent of set size. A guided search model similar to Hoffman

Analysis of Serial-Search-Based Code Acquisition in the Multiple-Transmit/ Multiple-Receive-Antenna-Aided DS-CDMA Downlink

by Seunghwan Won, Lajos Hanzo
"... Abstract—In this paper, we investigate the serial-search-based initial code-acquisition performance of direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) employing multiple transmit/ multiple receive antennas when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh channels. We characterize the associated ..."

How is the alphabet stored? Using priming to distinguish direct association from serial search

by Liesbeth Flobbe, Supervisor Hedderik Van Rijn, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen , 2005
"... Alphabetic retrieval is a prototypical task that is studied to gain insight into how humans learn and process long lists. We shall study two conflicting models of this process: serial search and direct association. To distinguish between these models, we shall derive predictions about priming effect ..."

Conjunction search revisited

by Anne Treisman, Sharon Sato - Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance , 1990
"... Search for conjunctions of highly discriminable features can be rapid or even parallel. This article explores, three possible accounts based on (a) perceptual segregation, (b) conjunction detectors, and (c) inhibition controlled separately by two or more distractor features. Search rates for conjunc ..."

was checked independently of the others. Unknown targets appear to be found only by serial search for each in turn. Searching through 4 sets of distractors was slower than searching through 2. In this paper, we propose to use a nonparametric noncoherent detector for PN code acquisition in DS/CDMA systems. We compare two verification modes and show that type I performs better than type II. We also compare the type I double-dwell scheme using the proposed detector with that using the conventional detector. The PN code acquisition scheme with the proposed detector is robust and has better performance than that with the conventional detector when the estimation of the interference variance is not possible.
