Robustness of skeletons and salient features in networks
, 2014
"... Real world network datasets often contain a wealth of complex topological information. In the face of these data, researchers often employ methods to extract reduced networks containing the most important structures or pathways, sometimes known as ‘skeletons ’ or ‘backbones’. Numerous such methods h ..."

the salient features extracted by two popular methods change when networks are perturbed, either by deleting nodes or links, or by randomly rewiring links. Our results indicate that simple, global statistics for skeletons can be accurately inferred even for noisy and incomplete network data, but it is crucial

Abstract — In this paper we conjecture that revolutionary advances in future energy services are needed and that these are only possible by means of information technology (IT). To support this claim, we first briefly describe the fundamental needs for changing the ways energy services have been provided, and possible consequences resulting from not adopting qualitatively new paradigms. We next make the case why managing energy services of the future to meet such needs will only be possible when pursuing a systematic deployment of ITbased mechanisms for processing, delivering and consuming energy. We stress open R&D questions to which basic answers are needed in order to rip benefits of IT. Notably, a multidisciplinary approach to modeling and simulating a cyberphysical system (CPS) comprising the physical energy grids, and its support communications, sensing, and computing cyber layers is essential. Designing regulatory policies for facilitating penetration of IT at the value is also viewed as one of the key R&D challenges. Finally, we introduce our vision of an ITframework

Abstract. Computer vision approaches to saliency are based, among others, on uniqueness [1], local complexity [2], distinctiveness [3, 4], spectral variation [5], and irregularity [6]. Saliency can also be viewed as the information in the data relative to a representation or model [7]. When a representation is built, a residual error is often minimised. The residual can be used to obtain saliency maps for solving challenging tasks of image and video processing. We introduce the notion of the resonant SVD and demonstrate that the SVD residual at the resonant spacing is selective to defects in spatially periodic surface textures and events in time-periodic videos. Examples with real-world images and videos are shown and discussed. 1

1. Master‟s degree course in Geology would be of 100 credits, where one credit course of theory will be of one clock hour per week running for 15 weeks and one credit for practical course will consist of 15 of laboratory exercise. 2. Student will have to take admission in Geology Department and complete 75 credits incorporated in the syllabus structure of Geology. The remaining 25 credits shall be chosen from courses offered by the Geology Department or other Departments of the University with credit system structure. 3. Four credits, one each in four semesters, have been allocated for Field work. 4. Every student shall complete 100 credits in a minimum of four semesters. All Semesters will have 25 credits each. 5. Academic calendar showing dates of commencement and end of teaching, internal assessment tests and term end examination will be prepared and duly notified before commencement of each semester every year. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE STUDENTS (CREDIT SYSTEM) The students seeking admission to M.Sc. Geology course are hereby informed that they are supposed to adhere to the following rules: 1. Fieldwork is a compulsory component of the syllabi. The students are supposed to attend all the field tours / field-cum-Laboratory Workshops organized by the department from time to time to cover credit Nos. GL-106, GL-206, GL-306 and GL-406 related to field components. The students shall attend the tours at their own cost and risk.

In this article I argue that history occupies pivotal position in the world-view and philosophy of life in the Chinese tradition. Chinese civilisation is deeply imbued with historical consciousness and its people are homo historiens in every sense. Historical thinking in traditional China is infused with a moral meaning. The notion of dao, that is, heavenly principle and human norm, stands at the centre of this consciousness. In view of its prac-tical operation, Chinese historical thinking is on one hand concrete, and on the other, analogical; it enables communication with the past and extra-polation of meanings from history. In this way, historical experience in China becomes a library where contemporary readers may engage in creative dialogues with the past. Since time immemorial, China has been noted for her historical conscious-ness. Chinese people and their society have been living under the tutelage of history. The founding emperors in imperial China always sought to legitimise their dynasties by invoking past glories. In the same vein, Chinese people have always turned to history to justify revolutions in the nations politics and culture. This article explores the peculiarities of Chinese historical thinking. The following section considers the sig-nificance of history in China, and second section delves into the signifi-cance of historical thinking in Chinese life, followed by concluding observations.
