The dangers of replication and a solution

by Jim Gray, Pat Helland, Patrick O'Neil , Dennis Shasha - IN PROCEEDINGS OF THE 1996 ACM SIGMOD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MANAGEMENT OF DATA , 1996
"... Update anywhere-anytime-anyway transactional replication has unstable behavior as the workload scales up: a ten-fold increase in nodes and traflc gives a thousand fold increase in deadlocks or reconciliations. Master copy replication (primary copyj schemes reduce this problem. A simple analytic mode ..."

model demonstrates these results. A new two-tier replication algorithm is proposed that allows mobile (disconnected) applications to propose tentative update transactions that are later applied to a master copy. Commutative update transactions avoid the instability of other replication schemes.

The Nash Bargaining Solution in Economic Modeling

by Ken Binmore, Ariel Rubinstein, Asher Wolinsky - Rand Journal of Economics , 1986
"... This article establishes the relationship between the static axiomatic theory of bargaining and the sequential strategic approach to bargaining. We consider two strategic models of alternating offers. The models differ in the source of the incentive of the bargaining parties to reach agreement: the ..."

the incentive to settle and with the proper disagreement jfoint chosen. The results provide a guide for the application of the Nash bar-gaining solution in economic modelling. 1.

New results in linear filtering and prediction theory

by R. E. Kalman, R. S. Bucy - TRANS. ASME, SER. D, J. BASIC ENG , 1961
"... A nonlinear differential equation of the Riccati type is derived for the covariance matrix of the optimal filtering error. The solution of this "variance equation " completely specifies the optimal filter for either finite or infinite smoothing intervals and stationary or nonstationary sta ..."

statistics. The variance equation is closely related to the Hamiltonian (canonical) differential equations of the calculus of variations. Analytic solutions are available in some cases. The significance of the variance equation is illustrated by examples which duplicate, simplify, or extend earlier results

USER’S GUIDE TO VISCOSITY SOLUTIONS OF SECOND ORDER PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

by Michael G. Crandall, Hitoshi Ishii, Pierre-louis Lions , 1992
"... The notion of viscosity solutions of scalar fully nonlinear partial differential equations of second order provides a framework in which startling comparison and uniqueness theorems, existence theorems, and theorems about continuous dependence may now be proved by very efficient and striking argume ..."

arguments. The range of important applications of these results is enormous. This article is a self-contained exposition of the basic theory of viscosity solutions.

The file drawer problem and tolerance for null results

by Robert Rosenthal - Psychological Bulletin , 1979
"... For any given research area, one cannot tell how many studies have been con-ducted but never reported. The extreme view of the "file drawer problem " is that journals are filled with the 5 % of the studies that show Type I errors, while the file drawers are filled with the 95 % of the stud ..."

% of the studies that show non-significant results. Quantitative procedures for computing the tolerance for filed and future null results are reported and illustrated, and the implications are discussed. Both behavioral researchers and statisti-cians have long suspected that the studies published in the behavioral

A solution to the simultaneous localization and map building (SLAM) problem

by M. W. M. Gamini Dissanayake, Paul Newman, Steven Clark, Hugh F. Durrant-whyte, M. Csorba - IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation , 2001
"... Abstract—The simultaneous localization and map building (SLAM) problem asks if it is possible for an autonomous vehicle to start in an unknown location in an unknown environment and then to incrementally build a map of this environment while simultaneously using this map to compute absolute vehicle ..."

location. Starting from the estimation-theoretic foundations of this problem developed in [1]–[3], this paper proves that a solution to the SLAM problem is indeed possible. The underlying structure of the SLAM problem is first elucidated. A proof that the estimated map converges monotonically to a relative

Closed-form solution of absolute orientation using unit quaternions

by Berthold K. P. Horn - J. Opt. Soc. Am. A , 1987
"... Finding the relationship between two coordinate systems using pairs of measurements of the coordinates of a number of points in both systems is a classic photogrammetric task. It finds applications in stereophotogrammetry and in robotics. I present here a closed-form solution to the least-squares pr ..."

FastSLAM: A Factored Solution to the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Problem

by Michael Montemerlo, Sebastian Thrun, Daphne Koller, Ben Wegbreit - In Proceedings of the AAAI National Conference on Artificial Intelligence , 2002
"... The ability to simultaneously localize a robot and accurately map its surroundings is considered by many to be a key prerequisite of truly autonomous robots. However, few approaches to this problem scale up to handle the very large number of landmarks present in real environments. Kalman filter-base ..."

Guaranteed minimumrank solutions of linear matrix equations via nuclear norm minimization,”

by Benjamin Recht , Maryam Fazel , Pablo A Parrilo - SIAM Review, , 2010
"... Abstract The affine rank minimization problem consists of finding a matrix of minimum rank that satisfies a given system of linear equality constraints. Such problems have appeared in the literature of a diverse set of fields including system identification and control, Euclidean embedding, and col ..."
Abstract - Cited by 562 (20 self) - Add to MetaCart
for the linear transformation defining the constraints, the minimum rank solution can be recovered by solving a convex optimization problem, namely the minimization of the nuclear norm over the given affine space. We present several random ensembles of equations where the restricted isometry property holds

Numerical solution of initial boundary value problems involving Maxwell’s equations in isotropic media

by Kane S. Yee - IEEE Trans. Antennas and Propagation , 1966
