Profitably Under-Report Competence?

by René Lindstädt, Jeffrey K. Staton , 2007
"... According to popular accounts of politics, candidates often appear to under-sell their qualities. Insofar as candidates, political and otherwise, typically construct images of high quality, it is unclear why a candidate would report an expected performance level below what he thought possible. The s ..."

that candidates should be increasingly likely to announce below their true quality as their political skill increases. The most skilled candidates are the most likely to under-report quality. This result suggests implications for how potential supporters, or more broadly, employers might structure the candidate

Many older adults have multiple chronic conditionsthat often require several drugs to prevent or treat symptoms and to maintain functional status (1). Subopti-mal prescribing makes these patient-centered goals difficult to achieve. Although some believe that under- or overpre-scribing is the most common type of suboptimal prescrib-ing, occurring in up to 50 % of older adults, evidence sug-gests that up to 92 % of older adults receive 1 or more inappropriate medications (2, 3). Of concern is that inap-propriate prescribing increases the risk for negative health outcomes, such as adverse drug reactions and increased use of health services (1, 3). In 2006, the National Committee for Quality Assur-ance (NCQA) released quality indicators based on a subset of updated explicit criteria for inappropriate prescribing commonly referred to as the Beers criteria (4). Two types of criteria were implemented as quality indicators: 42 High-Risk Medications in the Elderly (Drugs to Avoid in the Elderly), also commonly referred to as “drugs to

An estimation of periconceptional under-reporting of dietary energy intake

by Laura Mullaney, Amy C. O’higgins, Shona Cawley, Anne Doolan, Daniel Mccartney, Michael J. Turner
"... Background The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine periconceptional misreporting of energy intake (EI) using the Willet food frequency questionnaire (WFFQ). Methods Women were recruited in the first trimester. Women completed a semi-quantitative WFFQ. Maternal body composition was m ..."

between under-reporters and plausible reporters suggest that the exclusion of these under-reporters represents an important potential source of bias in obesity research among women in the periconceptional period.

Evidence for under‐reported western European emissions

by Stefan Reimann
"... [1] Western European emission inventories of the potent greenhouse gas trifluoromethane (HFC‐23) are validated at a country level by combining 2‐hourly atmospheric in‐situ measurements at Jungfraujoch (Switzerland) and Mace Head (Ireland) with Lagrangian transport simulations. HFC‐23 has an atmosphe ..."

For the study region we derive emissions of 144–216 Mg/yr for July 2008–July 2010, which are 60–140 % higher than the official

Under-reporting of gravidity in a rural Malawian population

by Humphreys E. Misiri, Adamson S. Muula

Case Report Torsion of the Retroperitoneal Kidney: Uncommon or Underreported?

by Michael Sosin , Wuya Lumeh , Matthew Cooper
"... Vascular torsion in a renal allograft after placement in the retroperitoneum is rare and has only been reported twice in the literature. It is an extrinsically mediated process that occurs at the vascular pedicle resulting in graft compromise and potential loss. Rapid diagnosis and immediate surgic ..."

G, Alpers K. Underreporting of human alveolar echinococcosis, Germany. Emerg Infect Dis. 2008 Jun; [Epub ahead of print] Underreporting of Human Alveolar

by Echinococcosis Germany, Pernille Jorgensen, Matthias An Der Heiden, Petra Kern, Irene Schöneberg, Gérard Krause
"... We estimated the total number of human alveolar echinococcosis cases in Germany from 2003 through 2005 using the multiple source capture-recapture method. We found a 3-fold higher incidence of the disease than that shown by national surveillance data. We propose a revision of the notification system ..."

Growing fox populations in Europe, especially in urban zones, have drawn attention to a potential increased risk for humans (7–9). In 2001, AE reporting became mandatory in Germany (10).
