STREPTOMYCIN was first described over five years ago by Waksman and his coworkers.21 As experience has accumulated regarding its clinical use, manifes-tations of toxicity have become increasingly and significantly apparent. Depres-sion of the blood-forming organs has been, however, an uncommon occurrence, and only two previous cases of aplastic anemia due to streptomycin are known to have been reported at the time of this communication. Little evidence of toxic effects of streptomycin administration upon the hematopoietic system has been observed in animal studies. Feldman and Hin-shaw10 noted no effect on hematopoietic tissues or hemoglobin values in tubercu-lous guinea pigs treated for 54 to 61 days with streptomycin. Molitor and associ-ates,17 in chronic toxicity experiments using mice, rats, guinea pigs, monkeys and dogs, found a slight anemia in monkeys only. This was most common in those animals treated 66 days. In monkeys and dogs, Mushett and Martland19 found a slight, transient normocytic anemia without changes in the other formed ele-ments of the blood. The marrows of these animals and of rats similarly treated

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Introduction. Inverted papilloma (IP) is an uncommon, benign yet aggressive neoplasm characterised by high recurrence rates and tendency towards malignant transformation.Themajority of IP cases originate in the ethmoid region, lateral wall of the nasal fossa, andmaxillary sinus. The authors report a case of an IP originating primarily from the nasolacrimal duct (NLD).Case.A69-year-old Caucasian gentleman presented with a lump in his right medial canthal region, epiphora, and discharge bilaterally. Radiological investigation revealed a well-defined, heterogeneous mass within the proximal NLD eroding the bony canal, protruding into the

Monetary Policy Shocks: What Have we Learned and to What End?

by Lawrence J. Christiano, Martin Eichenbaum , Charles L. Evans , 1998
"... This paper reviews recent research that grapples with the question: What happens after an exogenous shock to monetary policy? We argue that this question is interesting because it lies at the center of a particular approach to assessing the empirical plausibility of structural economic models that c ..."

The literature has not yet converged on a particular set of assumptions for identifying the effects of an exogenous shock to monetary policy. Nevertheless, there is considerable agreement about the qualitative

Determining the Number of Factors in Approximate Factor Models

by Jushan Bai, Serena Ng , 2000
"... In this paper we develop some statistical theory for factor models of large dimensions. The focus is the determination of the number of factors, which is an unresolved issue in the rapidly growing literature on multifactor models. We propose a panel Cp criterion and show that the number of factors c ..."

Answering the Skeptics: Yes, Standard Volatility Models Do Provide Accurate Forecasts

by Torben G. Andersen, Tim Bollerslev
