Fast and Simple Relational Processing of Uncertain Data

by Lyublena Antova, Thomas Jansen, Christoph Koch, Dan Olteanu
"... Abstract — This paper introduces U-relations, a succinct and purely relational representation system for uncertain databases. U-relations support attribute-level uncertainty using vertical partitioning. If we consider positive relational algebra extended by an operation for computing possible answer ..."

employed in off-the-shelf relational database management systems are effective for optimizing and processing queries on U-relations. In our experiments we show that query evaluation on U-relations scales to large amounts of data with high degrees of uncertainty.

Access path selection in a relational database management system

by P. Griffiths Selinger, M. M. Astrahan, D. D. Chamberlin, It. A. Lorie, T. G. Price , 1979
"... ABSTRACT: In a high level query and data manipulation language such as SQL, requests are stated non-procedurally, without reference to access paths. This paper describes how System R chooses access paths for both simple (single relation) and complex queries (such as joins), given a user specificatio ..."

specification of desired data as a boolean expression of predicates. System R is an experimental database management system developed to carry out research on the relational model of data. System R was designed and built by members of the IBM San Jose Research'Laboratory. 1.

Federated database systems for managing distributed, heterogeneous, and autonomous databases

by Amit P. Sheth, James A. Larson - ACM Computing Surveys , 1990
"... A federated database system (FDBS) is a collection of cooperating database systems that are autonomous and possibly heterogeneous. In this paper, we define a reference architecture for distributed database management systems from system and schema viewpoints and show how various FDBS architectures c ..."

Query evaluation techniques for large databases

by Goetz Graefe - ACM COMPUTING SURVEYS , 1993
"... Database management systems will continue to manage large data volumes. Thus, efficient algorithms for accessing and manipulating large sets and sequences will be required to provide acceptable performance. The advent of object-oriented and extensible database systems will not solve this problem. On ..."

is essential for the designer of database management software. This survey provides a foundation for the design and implementation of query execution facilities in new database management systems. It describes a wide array of practical query evaluation techniques for both relational and post-relational

Parallel database systems: the future of high performance database systems

by David J. Dewitt, Jim Gray - COMMUNICATIONS OF THE ACM , 1992
"... Parallel database machine architectures have evolved from the use of exotic hardware to a software parallel dataflow architecture based on conventional shared-nothing hardware. These new designs provide impressive speedup and scaleup when processing relational database queries. This paper reviews t ..."

From Data Mining to Knowledge Discovery in Databases.

by Usama Fayyad , Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro , Padhraic Smyth - AI Magazine, , 1996
"... ■ Data mining and knowledge discovery in databases have been attracting a significant amount of research, industry, and media attention of late. What is all the excitement about? This article provides an overview of this emerging field, clarifying how data mining and knowledge discovery in database ..."

in databases are related both to each other and to related fields, such as machine learning, statistics, and databases. The article mentions particular real-world applications, specific data-mining techniques, challenges involved in real-world applications of knowledge discovery, and current and future

The Cricket Location-Support System

by Nissanka B. Priyantha, Anit Chakraborty, Hari Balakrishnan , 2000
"... This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of Cricket, a location-support system for in-building, mobile, locationdependent applications. It allows applications running on mobile and static nodes to learn their physical location by using listeners that hear and analyze informatio ..."

to advertise this information to; it does not rely on any centralized management or control and there is no explicit coordination between beacons; it provides information to devices regardless of their type of network connectivity; and each Cricket device is made from off-the-shelf components and costs less

Querying object-oriented databases

by Michael Kifer, Won Kim, Yehoshua Sagiv - ACM SIGMOD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MANAGEMENT OF DATA , 1992
"... We present a novel language for querying object-oriented databases. The language is built around the idea of extended path expressions that substantially generalize [ZAN83], and on an adaptation of the first-order formalization of object-oriented languages from [KW89, KLW90, KW92]. The language inco ..."

be used to explore the database schema. ffl Views can be defined and manipulated in a much more uniform way than in other proposals. ffl Database schema can be explored in the very same language that is used to retrieve data. Unlike in relational languages, the user needs not know anything about

WordNet: A Lexical Database for English

by George A. Miller - COMMUNICATIONS OF THE ACM , 1995
"... Because meaningful sentences are composed of meaningful words, any system that hopes to process natural languages as people do must have information about words and their meanings. This information is traditionally provided through dictionaries, and machine-readable dictionaries are now widely avail ..."

Relational Databases for Querying XML Documents: Limitations and Opportunities

by Jayavel Shanmugasundaram, Kristin Tufte, Gang He, Chun Zhang, David DeWitt, Jeffrey Naughton , 1999
"... XML is fast emerging as the dominant standard for representing data in the World Wide Web. Sophisticated query engines that allow users to effectively tap the data stored in XML documents will be crucial to exploiting the full power of XML. While there has been a great deal of activity recently prop ..."
