New Idea

"... Adaptive advantages of the compound leaf form in flowering plants have so far remained elusive. A novel idea—proposed here—is that there are no direct advan-tages; the compound leaf evolved instead as a trade-off of selection in favour of something else: greater leafing intensity. Producing more lea ..."

In East and Central Africa, the nymphalid butterflies Danaus chrysippus, Acraea encedon and A. encedana are involved in a Müllerian mimicry complex. Unusually for aposematic mimetic organisms, the three species show extensive colour pattern polymorphism. Within the same geographic zone, the three species show female-biased sex ratios as a consequence of infection by maternally-inherited, male-killing bacteria. The co-occurrence of biased sex ratios and aposematic polymorphism within these three sympatric, mimetic butterfly species has led to the speculation that invasion by the male-killing bacteria and the subsequent female-biased sex ratios are the underlying reason for the maintenance of colour polymorphism in these species,

Image retrieval: ideas, influences, and trends of the new age

by Ritendra Datta, Dhiraj Joshi, Jia Li, James Z. Wang - ACM COMPUTING SURVEYS , 2008

Entrepreneurs and new ideas’

by B ; Biais , E C Perotti - The RAND Journal of Economics, , 2008

Even promising ideas can be unprofitable if they fail on one dimension, such as technical feasibility, correspondence to market demand or patentability. To screen good projects the entrepreneur needs to hire experts ..."

The ensemble Kalman Filter: Theoretical formulation and practical implementation.

by Geir Evensen - Ocean Dynamics, , 2003
"... Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive presentation and interpretation of the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) and its numerical implementation. The EnKF has a large user group and numerous publications have discussed applications and theoretical aspects of it. This paper rev ..."

reviews the important results from these studies and also presents new ideas and alternative interpretations which further explain the success of the EnKF. In addition to providing the theoretical framework needed for using the EnKF, there is also a focus on the algorithmic formulation and optimal

RSVP: A New Resource Reservation Protocol

by Lixia Zhang, Stephen Deering, Deborah Estrin, Scott Shenker, et al. , 1993
"... Whe origin of the RSVP protocol can be traced back to 1991, when a team of network researchers, including myself, started playing with a number of packet scheduling algorithms on the DARTNET (DARPA Testbed NETwork), a network testbed made of open source, workstation-based routers. Because scheduling ..."
