This ”work in progress ” paper seeks to contribute to the research in trust. In doing so the paper conciders the functions of trust and specifically the challenges to trust in on-line contexts. Further, it seeks to understand how trust can be conceptualized in the case of proprietary and open source software development respectively. The question is whether closed source development, and closed, opaque organizations in general, may be damaging to trust within the social context of reflexive modernity.
