This issue comes in the midst of serious social calamities and human right abuses occurring all over the world. As this is being written, shocking images of violence flash across South African television screens showing xenophobic attacks on refugees and immigrants who have escaped to that country in an attempt to reclaim some sense of dignity and safety having escaped ravishing poverty. Instead, they have been further victimized by locals who themselves are too afraid, too hungry, too angry and too tired of unkept promises, to share the little they have with those seen to be others. The act of othering can occur symbolically as well as physically, as illustrated in this year’s U.S. presidential nomination process that highlights issues of race and gender. How can educators begin to address these issues and educate youth about compassion, tolerance and empathy, particularly when the policies and practices that abound in our communities are becoming increasingly rigid and conservative? How do we as teachers and researchers ensure that what we teach, particularly in the English classroom, reaches our students and prompts them to think about their own practices and understandings more critically and within a framework of social justice? And,

We introduce the five rangeland types found in the arid and semiarid regions of South Africa, namely Arid Savanna, Arid Grassland, Nama-karoo, Succulent Karoo, and Thicket, and describe the important domestic herbivores associated with them. We continue by detailing the grazing management systems associated with the two major land tenure systems in the region, namely the freehold (commercial) and communal (subsistence). We briefly review production models for arid and semiarid regions, and using data from rainfall response surfaces, we provide a model of rangeland production. The arid and semiarid rangelands of South Africa present some unique challenges to range managers and graziers. In this article, we have highlighted but a few of these challenges, and in so doing have attempted to provide a refreshing view of the constraints to sustainable production of livestock.

The greatest threat to Information Security are the employees within an organization. Many security controls rely on the user in order to be effec-tive. It is thus vital to educate users about their role(s) in security. Many companies cannot afford, in terms of time or finances, to replace employees during training periods. The Web has long since been identified as a viable alternative to traditional training. To a certain extent, using the Web as a training platform depends on user buy-in. Web 2.0, which involves users and is largely user driven, is one way in which such buy-in could be obtained. This paper will discuss both the data acquisition and storage of Information Security principles to a centralized knowledge store, from which Web based Security Education technologies can draw inference. These web based se-curity education applications should involve the user, thereby securing their buy-in and adding to the overall effectiveness of the training program. The use of Resource Definition Framework (RDF), SPARQL Protocol And RDF Query Language (SPARQL) and the Semantic Web will be discussed as pos-sible solutions to the storage and transport of represented knowledge between multiple systems.

Abstract. A survey of livestock production systems was conducted in the Vhembe District, located between 22850 latitude and 30710 longitude in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The objective of the study was to investigate the benefits obtained from, and key functions of, cattle production, as well as related breeding objectives in smallholder livestock production in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Data were collected by means of a general survey questionnaire and a participatory rural appraisal (PRA) exercise. The results indicate that almost 60 % of farmers own < 10 cattle. Female animals constituted the largest component of the herd (55.02%). Although the bull: cow ratiowas extremely high (1: 3.7), the calving rate was low at 35.60%, with an extremely high herd mortality of 15.70 % and a low off-take of 8.70%. In a pairwise ranking, the benefits obtained from cattle by smallholder livestock farmers are as follows: selling and meat consumption (4), wealth, status and savings (3), socio-cultural activities (2) and draught power (1). The ‘cattle complex’, where cattle are kept for prestige and status, is still appropriate, but cattle also make significant contributions in respect to selling andmeat consumption, and arable inputs such as draft and fertiliser. It is concluded that benefits obtained from cattle form the basis of decision-making by smallholder cattle owners with respect to livestock production.
