on captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), was tested on a population of free-ranging bottlenose dolphins. Twenty hours of tape were analysed and 312 whistles, including multi-loop whistles where basic contours are repeated, were identified. Contours were extracted from all 312 whistles, giving 415
