Abstract: For some sixty years it has appeared to many physicists that probability plays a fundamentally di erent role in quantum theory than it does in statistical mechanics and analysis of measurement errors. It is a commonly heard statement that probabilities calculated within a pure state have a di erent character than the probabilities with which di erent pure states appear in a mixture, or density matrix. As Pauli put it, the former represents \Eine prinzipielle Unbestimmtheit, nicht nur Unbekanntheit". But this viewpoint leads to so many paradoxes and mysteries that we explore the consequences of the uni ed view, that all probability signi es only incomplete human information. By carrying out a systematic expansion of Feynman integrals in the lattice spacing, we show that the axial anomaly in the U (1) lattice gauge theory with Wilson fermions, as determined in oneloop order from an irrelevant lattice operator in the Ward identity, must necessarily be identical to that computed from the dimensionally regulated continuum Feynman integrals for the triangle diagrams.
