. In distributed object systems, one has the possibility to make method invocations on objects located on other host. During such an invocation, data is sent to another host and back. However, the system tries to hide this and simulate a standcard method invocation as close as possible. Some systems [Voyager] try to offer other invocation semantics, e.g. asynchronous method invocation. We try to go a step further and offer the actual invocation as first class abstractions. The programmer can build his own abstractions by either implementing his own or by combining existing abstractions. With this system, he can build arbitrary invocations semantics, e.g. synchronous method invocation with transactional semantics, which also logs all method invocations. 1 Overview Today's highly interconnected systems put more and more emphasis on the exploitation of the advantages inherent to a network, i.e. increased fault tolerance, better availability, and easier scalability. However, n...
The YmdB Phosphodiesterase Is a Global Regulator of Late Adaptive Responses in Bacillus subtilis
"... Bacillus subtilismutants lacking ymdB are unable to form biofilms, exhibit a strong overexpression of the flagellin gene hag, and are deficient in SlrR, a SinR antagonist. Here, we report the functional and structural characterization of YmdB, and we find that YmdB is a phosphodiesterase with activi ..."

formation. The deletion of ymdB affects the expression of more than 800 genes; the levels of theD-dependent motility regulon and several sporulation genes are in-creased, and the levels of the SinR-repressed biofilm genes are decreased, confirming the role of YmdB in regulating late adaptive responses of B
Data Oscillation and Convergence of Adaptive FEM
- SIAM J. Numer. Anal
, 1999
"... Data oscillation is intrinsic information missed by the averaging process associated with finite element methods (FEM) regardless of quadrature. Ensuring a reduction rate of data oscillation, together with an error reduction based on a posteriori error estimators, we construct a simple and efficient ..."

and efficient adaptive FEM for elliptic PDE with linear rate of convergence without any preliminary mesh adaptation nor explicit knowledge of constants. Any prescribed error tolerance is thus achieved in a finite number of steps. A number of numerical experiments in 2d and 3d yield quasi-optimal meshes along
Late Component Adaptation
, 1998

We propose binary component adaptation (BCA) as a mechanism to modify existing components (such as Java classfiles) to the specific needs of a programmer. Designing the User Interface for Multimodal Speech and Pen-based Gesture Applications: State-of-the-Art Systems and Future Research Directions
, 2000
"... The growing interest in multimodal interface design is inspired in large part by the goals of supporting more transparent, flexible, efficient, and powerfully expressive means of humancomputer interaction than in the past. Multimodal interfaces are expected to support a wider range of diverse applic ..."

early and late fusion approaches, and the new hybrid symbolic/statistical approach. We also describe a diverse collection of state-of-the-art multimodal systems that process users' spoken and gestural input. These applications range from map-based and virtual reality systems for engaging
Packet audio playout delay adjustment: performance bounds and algorithms
- ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems
, 1998
"... In packet audio applications, packets are buffered at a receiving site and their playout delayed in order to compensate for variable network delays. In this paper, we consider the problem of adaptively adjusting the playout delay in order to keep this delay as small as possible, while at the same ti ..."

AMMI Model Analysis of Stability and Adaptability of Late Duration
"... Abstract: Multilocation yield trials on late duration (106-125 days) finger millet genotypes were conducted under early and late transplanting at Bhubaneswar and early direct-sown condition at Berhampur for three years 2004-2006, during kharif season. G×E interaction analysis of grain yield in AMMI ..."

110 showed better adaptation to both early and late transplanting conditions at Bhubaneswar, indicating that the genotype is suitable for transplanting condition and not for direct-sown condition. Six other genotypes showed specific adaptation to single environment only, of which Chilika ranked first
Delayed Adaptation of the Heart to Stress Late Preconditioning
"... Abstract—The early phase of preconditioning (PC) lasts 2 to 3 hours and protects against myocardial infarction, but not against stunning. In contrast, the late phase of PC lasts for 3 to 4 days and protects against both myocardial stunning and infarction, making this phenomenon more clinically relev ..."
