Abstract Split execution is a common model for providing afriendly environment on a foreign machine. In this model, a remotely executing process sends some or all of its systemcalls back to a home environment for execution. Unfortunately, hand-coding split execution systems for experimen-tation and research is difficult and error-prone. We have built a tool, Bypass, for quickly producing portable and cor-rect split execution systems for unmodified legacy applications. We demonstrate Bypass by using it to transparentlyconnect a POSIX application to a simple data staging system based on the Globus toolkit. 1.
The BSD Packet Filter: A New Architecture for User-level Packet Capture
, 1992
"... Many versions of Unix provide facilities for user-level packet capture, making possible the use of general purpose workstations for network monitoring. Because network monitors run as user-level processes, packets must be copied across the kernel/user-space protection boundary. This copying can be m ..."

be minimized by deploying a kernel agent called a packet filter, which discards unwanted packets as early as possible. The original Unix packet filter was designed around a stack-based filter evaluator that performs sub-optimally on current RISC CPUs. The BSD Packet Filter (BPF) uses a new, registerbased
Stealthy Deployment and Execution of In-Guest Kernel Agents
- In BlackHat
, 2009
"... As more and more virtual machines (VM) are packed into a physical machine, refactoring common kernel components shared by virtual machines running on the same physical machine could signifi-cantly reduce the overall resource consumption. The refactored kernel component typically runs on a special VM ..."

VM called a virtual appliance. Because of the semantics gap in Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)-based virtualization, a physical machine’s virtual appliance requires the support of per-VM in-guest agents to perform VM-specific operations such as kernel data structure access and modification
A Pre-Kernel Agent Platform for Security Assurance
"... Abstract—Without the security assurance from the underlining operating system, software agents and agencies are constantly under security threats through the operating system. Although the security issues between software agents and agencies have been studied intensively, any formulated counter-meas ..."

-measurement of these issues are subject to attacks that are able to exploit the vulnerabilities of the operating system kernel (OS kernel). To protect agents and agencies against such risks, we proposed a novel approach that isolates the OS kernel and limit modifications to the agency system in the physical memory space. Our
KLAIM: a Kernel Language for Agents Interaction and Mobility
- IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering
, 1997
"... We investigate the issue of designing a kernel programming language for Mobile Computing and describe Klaim, a language that supports a programming paradigm where processes, like data, can be moved from one computing environment to another. The language consists of a core Linda with multiple tuple s ..."

A Meta-Model for the Analysis and Design of Organizations in Multi-Agent Systems
, 1998
"... This paper presents a generic meta-model of multi-agent systems based on organizational concepts such as groups, roles and structures. This model, called AALAADIN, defines a very simple description of coordination and negotiation schemes through multi-agent systems. Aalaadin is a meta-model of artif ..."

of organizational reflection which uses the same conceptual model to describe systemlevel tasks such as remote communication and migration of agents. Finally, we briefly describe a platform, called MADKIT, based on this model. It relies on a minimal agent kernel with platform-level services implemented as agents
The JavaSeal mobile agent kernel
- Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems
