Intelligent Scissors for Image Composition

by Eric N. Mortensen, William A. Barrett - In Computer Graphics, SIGGRAPH Proceedings , 1995
"... We present a new, interactive tool called Intelligent Scissors which we use for image segmentation and composition. Fully automated segmentation is an unsolved problem, while manual tracing is inaccurate and laboriously unacceptable. However, Intelligent Scissors allow objects within digital images ..."

-dimensional graph searching problem. DP provides mathematically optimal boundaries while greatly reducing sensitivity to local noise or other intervening structures. Robustness is further enhanced with on-the-fly training which causes the boundary to adhere to the specific type of edge currently being followed

Cultivating competence, self-efficacy, and intrinsic interest through proximal self-motivation.

by Albert Bandura , Dale H Schunk Bandura , A Schunk , D H - Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, , 1981
"... Abstract: The present experiment tested the hypothesis that self-motivation through proximal goal setting serves as an effective mechanism for cultivating competencies, self-percepts of efficacy, and intrinsic interest. Children who exhibited gross deficits and disinterest in mathematical tasks pur ..."

learning theory (Bandura, 1977b, in press), self-directedness operates through a self system that comprises cognitive structures and subfunctions for perceiving, evaluating, motivating, and regulating behavior. An important, cognitively based source of self-motivation relies on the intervening processes

Stress, coping and social support processes: Where are we? What next?

by Peggy A Thoits - Journal of Health and Social Behavior, , 1995
"... JSTOR is a not-for-profit service that helps scholars, researchers, and students discover, use, and build upon a wide range of content in a trusted digital archive. We use information technology and tools to increase productivity and facilitate new forms of scholarship. For more information about J ..."

. Qualitative comparative analysis, optimal matching analysis, and event-structure analysis are new techniques which may help advance research in these broad topic areas. To enhance the effectiveness of coping and social support interventions, intervening mechanisms need to be better understood. Nevertheless

When Should the Government Intervene?

by Arthur Charpentier, Benoît Le Maux, Arthur Charpentier, Benoît Le Maux
"... Preliminary draft. Please do not quote (Comments are welcome) Tuesday 9 th November, 2010 The present research relaxes three of the usual assumptions made in the insurance literature. It is assumed that (1) there is a finite number of risks, (2) the risks are not statistically independent and (3) th ..."

In this context, the article analyses two models of natural catastrophe insurance: a model of insurance with limited liability and a model with unlimited guarantee. Among others, the results confirm the idea that the natural catastrophe insurance industry

STRUCTURAL MUTATIONS INTERVENED IN THE SOCIAL INSURANCE SYSTEMS

by Major Dan, Cluj Napoca, Facultatea Economice, Gestiunea Afacerilor

Social insurance doesn’t stand much chance of survival to the wave of globalization. Principles, such as inter- and intragenerational solidarity or the redistribution of the national wealth are gradually replaced by completely different or even opposite ones, such as individualism and capitalism, which are closer to the mercantile spirit of the globalization movement. The principle of solidarity is dangerous to the promotors of globalization because it creates a sense of unity and empathy between people and this diminishes the effect of the “divide et impera ” policy which needs to be applied even on the individual level. Actually we are witnessing a process of atomization of the society by the autization of the individuals. We can say that one of the tendencies of today’s world manifesting itself in a striking manner in the social domain is represented by the convergence of social systems towards the North-Western social model which, in the absence of a credible alternative, expands rapidly to a planetary level. social insurance, globalization, pensions

On the Application of Intervening Variables for Stochastic Finite Element Analysis

by M A Valdebenito , A A Labarca , H A Jensen
"... Abstract This paper investigates the application of first order Taylor series expansion considering intervening variables for estimating second order statistics for problems of stochastic finite element analysis. In particular, two types of intervening variables are considered. The focus is on stud ..."

Results obtained indicate that the use of intervening variables can lead to improved estimation of second order statistics when compared with traditional approaches based

Hyperbolic structures on 3–manifolds II: Surface groups and 3–manifolds which fiber over the circle

by William P. Thurston , 1998
"... The main result (0.1) of this paper is that every atoroidal three-manifold that fibers over the circle has a hyperbolic structure. Consequently, every fibered three-manifold admits a geometric decomposition. The main tool for constructing hyperbolic structures on fibered three-manifolds is the dou ..."

Are the Highest-Redshift Quasars Magnified by Intervening Gravitational Lenses?

by J. Stuart, B. Wyithe, Abraham Loeb , 2002
"... The Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS) has recently discovered exceptionally bright quasars1 with redshifts of up to 6.28. Naively, these observations imply the existence of black holes with masses in excess of a few billion solar masses only a billion years after the big bang. Moreover the inferred lu ..."

Even if these accreting black holes shine near their maximum (Eddington) luminosity, their observed fluxes require the assembly of a mass ∼>

Taking Waltz beyond Waltz: Socialization as an Intervening Variable in Structural Realism

by Convegno Annuale, Società Italiana, Scienza Politica, Andrea Locatelli, Pier Domenico Tortola , 2009
"... Rationalism, pessimism and indeterminacy are three central characteristics of Waltz’s structural realism. Not surprisingly, they are also the aspects that most often come under attack by scholars aiming to either criticize or improve on Waltz’s ideas. Standing out in the former group, constructivist ..."
