Mediators in the architecture of future information systems

by Gio Wiederhold - IEEE COMPUTER , 1992
"... The installation of high-speed networks using optical fiber and high bandwidth messsage forwarding gateways is changing the physical capabilities of information systems. These capabilities must be complemented with corresponding software systems advances to obtain a real benefit. Without smart softw ..."

"... Abstract A new software suite, called Crystallography & NMR System (CNS), has been developed for macromolecular structure determination by X-ray crystallography or solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In contrast to existing structure determination programs the architecture o ..."

aring in that grammar. Problem-oriented languages are also used to describe computations over trees, storage of entities and their properties, and production of output text. At first glance, the use of a variety of languages simply makes Eli harder to learn. The payoff, however, is significant. For example, most of the interesting tasks of any language processor involve computations over trees. A description of such a computation in a programming language embodies relationships among values at various nodes in the tree, a traversal algorithm, and the necessary intermediate storage. If an attribute grammar is used for the description, however, only the relationships among values need be described - the traversal algorithm and intermediate storage requirements can be deduced from those relationships [7]. Experience shows that hand-coded tree computations have a larger investment in the traversal algorithm and intermediate storage management than in the computation of the relationships.

The Paradyn Parallel Performance Measurement Tools

by Barton P. Miller, Mark D. Callaghan, Jonathan M. Cargille, Jeffrey K. Hollingsworth, R. Bruce Irvin , Karen L. Karavanic, Krishna Kunchithapadam, Tia Newhall - IEEE COMPUTER , 1995
