Automating the Design of Graphical Presentations of Relational Information

by Jock Mackinlay - ACM Transactions on Graphics , 1986
"... The goal of the research described in this paper is to develop an application-independent presentation tool that automatically designs effective graphical presentations (such as bar charts, scatter plots, and connected graphs) of relational information. Two problems are raised by this goal: The codi ..."

Learning in graphical models

by Michael I. Jordan - STATISTICAL SCIENCE , 2004
"... Statistical applications in fields such as bioinformatics, information retrieval, speech processing, image processing and communications often involve large-scale models in which thousands or millions of random variables are linked in complex ways. Graphical models provide a general methodology for ..."

Data Characterization for Intelligent Graphics Presentation

by Steven F. Roth, Joe Mattis - In Proceedings of the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (SIGCHI '90 , 1990
"... An automatic presentation system is an intelligent interface component which receives information from a user or application program and designs a combination of graphics and text that effectively conveys it. It is a facility that assumes the presentation responsibilities for other programs. An impo ..."

For the moment, a node K looks like K k l where the number of wires going in and out of K depends on the specification of K given by a signature. The signature K = (P; K) consists of a set P of basic types, called prime arities and denoted by p; q; r; : : : , and a set

In our era of "shareholder value", news of redundancies in leading global companies is good news for the stock market. The coincidence of this kind of news with growing unemployment creates the impression of a direct and simple relationship between the two developments. In this paper, we use official data on employment and unemployment and exploit a number of surveys of establishments, individuals and, more specifically, unemployed persons in order to point out several paradoxes. We find that dismissals for economic reasons account for only a fairly small share of separations. Furthermore, the contracting sectors produce less job destruction, have less labour turnover, make less use of dismissals and produce below-average unemployment inflows. We find also that among samples of unemployed persons the percentage of those who lost their last job due to a dismissal for economic reasons is rather high. We do not know, however, from which sectors these unemployed originated. From an analytical perspective, it must be concluded that the mechanisms by which structural change produces unemployment are still rather obscure. Event history analysis based on data sets of individuals is needed to shed more light on
