Visualizing Usenet: A factor analytic approach

by John C. Paolillo - Proceedings of the 33rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. Los Alamitos, CA: IEEE Computer Society , 2000
"... Usenet is a widely popular system for organizing and distributing asynchronous discussions, but the newsgroup hierarchies and messages ÒthreadsÓ of Usenet do little to assist users in navigating through the hundreds of thousands of messages that appear on a single day. Messages may be cross-posted t ..."

Using common factor analysis of word frequency lists extracted from a corpus of soc.culture Usenet messages, I present displays that are organized by language, topic of discussion, and frequency of interaction. Thus, by using information

Three approaches to qualitative content analysis.

by Hsiu-Fang Hsieh , Sarah E Shannon , 2005

This paper makes an attempt to examine the strategies incorporated by members in urban and rural families while trying to resolve conflict(s) at the time ofmaking purchases. It is imperative for marketers to understand dynamics offamily decision making process, from which conflicts arise between spouses in the course ofdecision making as also their resolution, both ofwhich are interlinked, hence need considerable attention. Suchan analysis helps marketers inframing their promotional strategies to the member(s) most influential in making purchase decision such that divergence ofopinion between members is minimised. I n the past, the researchers focussed on outcomes inthe buying decision process in terms of 'whodecides ' in families at the time of making purchases. Of late, exploration of the buying process has been established as necessary to understand as to 'how' purchase decisions are made in families (Davis, 1976). In the course of making decisions, when family members participate, they put forth their individual preferences and try to have the final decision in favour oftheir choice. Ifmore than one family member tries to persuade others towards his/her preferred choice, it is quite possible that

Broadcasting in the Public Interest: A Factor Analytical Approach to Definition

by Brown Barbara, Barbara Brown
"... Since the Federal Communications Commission is to be a regulation service in the public interest, several studies investigated what several Midwestern American groups would consider "in public interest. " The study began in 1991 with an examination of college students ' attitudes. A s ..."

second part of the study (in 1992) administered questionnaires to adults (age 53 to 92) in retirement communities and senior activity centers; and to 125 church members in a college town of 20,000. Researchers for the study used factor analysis because it focuses attention on commonalities among a broad

Evaluating the use of exploratory factor analysis in psychological research

by Leandre R. Fabrigar, Duane T. Wegener, Robert C. MacCallum, Erin J. Strahan - PSYCHOLOGICAL METHODS , 1999
"... Despite the widespread use of exploratory factor analysis in psychological research, researchers often make questionable decisions when conducting these analyses. This article reviews the major design and analytical decisions that must be made when conducting a factor analysis and notes that each of ..."

MATRIX FACTORIZATION TECHNIQUES FOR RECOMMENDER SYSTEMS

by Yehuda Koren, Robert Bell, Chris Volinsky - IEEE COMPUTER , 2009
"... As the Netflix Prize competition has demonstrated, matrix factorization models are superior to classic nearest-neighbor techniques for producing product recommendations, allowing the incorporation of additional information such as implicit feedback, temporal effects, and confidence levels. Structural equation modeling in practice: a review and recommended two-step approach.

by James C Anderson , J L Kellogg , David W Gerbing , Jeanne Brett , Claes Fornell , David Larcker , William Perreault Jr , James Steiger - Psychological Bulletin, , 1988

The Cougar Approach to In-Network Query Processing in Sensor Networks

by Yong Yao, Johannes Gehrke - SIGMOD Record , 2002
"... The widespread distribution and availability of smallscale sensors, actuators, and embedded processors is transforming the physical world into a computing platform. One such example is a sensor network consisting of a large number of sensor nodes that combine physical sensing capabilities such as te ..."

the data is aggregated and stored for offline querying and analysis. This approach has two major drawbacks. First, the user cannot change the behavior of the system on the fly. Second, conservation of battery power is a major design factor, but a central system cannot make use of in-network programming
