• keeps track of a “boundary ” in X, or • contains infinitesimal information about a family, of which X is a fiber and involves monoids ( → toric geometry, combina-torics, etc.). Example: start with a smooth non-proper variety Y/k, compactify it to Y ⊆ X, and say D = X \ Y is a NC (normal crossings) divisor. X is nicer to work with, but what we actually care about is Y. Idea: encode the stuff that we added (the divisor D) in the geometry. One way to do it: take M(U) = {f ∈ OX(U) | f is invertible outside of D}. This is a subsheaf of monoids of OX containing O×X, that somehow keeps track of the boundary D.

Estimating a bivariate density when there are extra data on one or both components
- Biometrika
, 2006
"... ABSTRACT. Assume we have a dataset, Z say, from the joint distribution of random variables X and Y, and two further, independent datasets, X and Y, from the marginal distributions of X and Y, respectively. We wish to combine X, Y and Z, so as to construct an estimator of the joint density. This prob ..."

. This problem is readily solved in some parametric circumstances. For example, if the joint distribution were normal then we would combine data from X and Z to estimate the mean and variance of X; proceed analogously to estimate the mean and variance of Y; but use data from Z alone to estimate E(XY). However
Space-time block coding for wireless communications: performance results
- IEEE J. Select. Areas. Commun
, 1999
"... Abstract—We document the performance of space–time block codes [13], [14], which provide a new paradigm for transmission over Rayleigh fading channels using multiple transmit antennas. Data is encoded using a space–time block code, and the encoded data is split into n streams which are simultaneousl ..."

Quantifying the Benefits of New Products: The Case of the Minivan
, 2002
"... This paper proposes a technique for obtaining more precise estimates of demand and supply curves when one is constrained to market-level data. The technique allows one to augment market share data with information relating consumer demographics to the characteristics of the products they purchase. T ..."

. This extra information plays the same role as consumer-level data, allowing estimated substitution patterns and (thus) welfare to directly reflect demographic-driven differences in tastes for observed characteristics. I apply the technique to the automobile market, estimating the economic effects
View Maintenance in a Warehousing Environment
- IN PROCEEDINGS OF SIGMOD
, 1995
"... A warehouse is a repository of integrated information drawn from remote data sources. Since a warehouse effectively implements materialized views, we must maintain the views as the data sources are updated. This view maintenance problem differs from the traditional one in that the view definition an ..."

Implicit Feedback for Inferring User Preference: A Bibliography
, 2003
"... ... In this paper we consider the use of implicit feedback techniques for query expansion and user profiling in information retrieval tasks. These techniques unobtrusively obtain information about users by watching their natural interactions with the system. Some of the user behaviors that have been ..."

accurate than explicit measures [Nic97], but as large quantities of implicit data can be gathered at no extra cost to the user, they are attractive alternatives. Moreover, implicit measures can be combined with explicit ratings to obtain a more accurate representation of user interests. Implicit
