Dendritic cells use macropinocytosis and the mannose receptor to concentrate macromolecules in the major histocompatibility complex class II compartment: down-regulation by cytokines and bacterial products.J. Exp. Mecl

by Federica Sallusto, R Marina Cella, Carlo Danieli, Antonio , 1995
"... We have previously demonstrated that human peripheral blood low density mononuclear cells cultured in granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and interleukin (IL)-4 develop into dendritic cells (DCs) that are extremely efficient in presenting soluble antigens to T ceils. To identif ..."

on DCs. At low ligand concentrations, the MR can deliver a large number of ligands to the cell in successive rounds. Thus, while macropinocytosis endows DCs with a high capacity, nonsaturable mechanism for capture of any soluble antigen, the MR gives an extra capacity for antigen capture with some degree

. Anthropogenic sources of black carbon, although distributed globally, are most concentrated in the tropics where solar irradiance is highest. Black carbon is often transported over long distances, mixing with other aerosols along the way. The aerosol mix can form transcontinental plumes of atmospheric brown

Harmonic morphisms between Riemannian manifolds

by John C. Wood , 2003
"... Abstract. Harmonic morphisms are mappings between Riemannian manifolds which preserve Laplace’s equation. They can be characterized as harmonic maps which enjoy an extra property called horizontal weak conformality or semiconformality. We shall give a brief survey of the theory concentrating on (i) ..."

What do entrepreneurs pay for venture capital affiliation

by David H. Hsu, Joshua Gans, Rick Green (the, Thomas Hellmann, Steve Kaplan, Augustin L, Especially Scott Stern - Journal of Finance , 2004
"... This study empirically evaluates the certification and value-added roles of reputable venture capitalists (VCs). Using a novel sample of entrepreneurial start-ups with multiple financing offers, I analyze financing offers made by competing VCs at the first professional round of start-up funding, hol ..."

, holding characteristics of the start-up fixed. Offers made by VCs with a high reputation are three times more likely to be accepted, and high-reputation VCs acquire start-up equity at a 10–14 % discount. The evidence suggests that VCs ’ “extra-financial ” value may be more distinctive than

of patients to extra-large hospitals

by Du Pyo Hong, Jaeki Song
"... Purpose: In Korean society, extra-large hospitals are congested with the majority of patients. Because of the congestions, the urgent patients need to wait anywhere from as short as a month to around three months. These concentrations of the patients on the extra-large hospitals causes not only the ..."

Black holes and extra dimensions

by Dejan Stojkovic , 2005
"... Abstract. In models with large extra dimensions that accommodate a TeV-scale gravity Einstein’s equations can exist. We study interaction of such black holes with our world — a brane embedded in a higher dimensional space. In such a setup there exist a host of new phenomena that do not have analogs ..."

Testosterone, Plumage Colouration and Extra-Pair

by Paternity Male, North-american Barn Swallows, Cas Eikenaar, Megan Whitham, Jan Komdeur, Marco Van Der Velde, Ignacio T. Moore

Variation in elevated testosterone concentrations among males may have a considerable impact on fitness. For example, testosterone implants enhance behaviours impor ..."

SIGNIFICANCE OF ADENOSINE DEAMINASE SERUM CONCENTRATIONS IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF EXTRA-PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS

by Milosevic B
"... Extra pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is a growing problem worldwide. Due to the nature of the disease, the diversity of clinical pictures as well as its minor epidemiological importance, the diagnosis is difficult and often late. In addition to standard TB diagnostic techniques use of new biochemical ..."

INTRA AND EXTRA ERYTHROCYTE LITHIUM ION CONCENTRATION RATIOS IN MANIC PATIENTS 1

In a study RBC-Plasma lithium ratios in manic patients treated with lithium we found that lithium responders had higher lithium ratios than lithium non-responders. There was, however, no cut off value which could differentiate lithium responders from non-responders. Elizur et al. (1972) suggested that erythrocyte lithium to plasma lithium ratio (lithium ratio) may distinguish unipolar from bipolar affective illness. Mendels and Frazer (1973) suggested that lithium ratio may predict response to lithium in depressed patients, in that patients with ratios more than 0.5 would respond to lithium therapy and those with ratios less than 0.5 would not. This was elaborated and corroborated by the same authors in a further study. (Mendels & Frazer, 1974).
