Dropout from higher education: A theoretical synthesis of recent research
- Review of Educational Research
, 1975
"... Despite the very extensive literature on dropout from higher education, much remains unknown about the nature of the dropout process. In large measure, the failure of past research to delineate more clearly the multiple characteristics of dropout can be traced to two major shortcomings; namely, inad ..."

A sentimental education: Sentiment analysis using subjectivity summarization based on minimum cuts

Sentiment analysis seeks to identify the viewpoint(s) underlying a text span; an example application is classifying a movie review as “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”. To determine this sentiment polarity, we propose a novel machine-learning method that applies text-categorization techniques to just the subjective portions of the document. Extracting these portions can be implemented using efficient techniques for finding minimum cuts in graphs; this greatly facilitates incorporation of cross-sentence contextual constraints. The evaluation of numerous school reforms requires an understanding of the value of better schools. Given the difficulty of calculating the relationship between school quality and student outcomes, I turn to another method and use house prices to infer the value parents place on school quality. I look within school districts at houses located on attendance district boundaries; houses then differ only by the elementary school the child attends. I thereby effectively remove the variation in neighborhoods, taxes, and school spending. I nd that parents are willing to pay 2.5 percent more for a 5 percent increase in test scores. This nding is robust to a number of sensitivity checks. I.
Does Compulsory School Attendance Affect Schooling and Earnings?
, 1990

Computer support for knowledge-building communities
- The Journal of the Learning Sciences
, 1994

Analysis of TCP Performance over Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Part I: Problem Discussion and Analysis of Results
, 1999
"... Mobile ad hoc networks have gained a lot of attention lately as a means of providing continuous network connectivity to mobile computing devices regardless of physical location. Recently, a large amount of research has focused on the routing protocols needed in such an environment. In this two-part ..."

-part report, we investigate the effects that link breakage due to mobility has on TCP performance. Through simulation, we show that TCP throughput drops significantly when nodes move because of TCP's inability to recognize the difference between link failure and congestion. We also analyze specific
