iv This dissertation is about audio content-based search. Specifically, it is on developing tech-nologies for bridging the semantic gap that currently prevents wide-deployment of audio content-based search engines. Audio search engines rely on metadata, mostly human gener-ated, to manage collections of audio assets. Even though time-consuming and error-prone, human labeling is a common practice. Audio content-based methods, algorithms that auto-matically extract description from audio files, are generally not mature enough to provide a user friendly representation for interacting with audio content. Mostly, content-based methods are based on low-level descriptions, while high-level or semantic descriptions are beyond current capabilities. This dissertation has two parts. In the first one we explore the strengths and limitation of a pure low-level audio description technique: audio finger-printing. We prove, by implementation of different systems, that automatically extracted low-level description of audio are able to successfully solve a series of tasks such as linking unlabeled audio to corresponding metadata, duplicate detection or integrity verification.

In memory of my grandparents. The Web is quickly shifting from a document browsing and delivery system to a hugely complex ecosystem of interconnected online applications. A relevant portion of these ap-plications dramatically increase the number of users required to dynamically authenticate themselves and to, on the other hand, to identify the service they want to use. In order to manage interactions among such users/services is required a flexible but powerful mecha-nism. Trust management, and in particular trust negotiation techniques, is a reasonable solution. In this work we present the formalization of the well known trust negotiation framework Trust-X, of a rule-based policy definition language, called X-RNL. Moreover, we present the extension of both the framework and of the language to provide advanced trust negotiation architectures, namely negotiations among groups. We also provide protocols to adapt trust negotiations to mobile environments, specifi-cally, we present protocols allowing a trust negotiation to be executed among several, dis-
