The Logic of Violence in Civil War
, 2006
"... and civil war. This interest is driven by two political developments: first, the decline of interstate wars and the concomitant rise of internal or civil wars (David 1997); and second, the decline of civil wars that are classified as “ideological ” or class-based and the concomitant rise of conflict ..."

) conflict, ” (b) between “violence in times of peace ” and “violence in times of war, ” and (c) between different types of violence based on the intersection of two criteria: the purpose and the production of violence. Second, I sketch a simple model of violence in civil war based on a corresponding

Deep set operators for xquery
- In XIME-P
, 2005
"... There are three set operators defined in XQuery, namely union, intersect and except. They take node sequences as operands, in which each node is identified by its node-ID and treated as an atomic entity. However, according to XML semantics, each node is “a set of set(s)”, which have descendants in a ..."

. In this extended semantics, the comparison during query processing are conducted not only on nodes of both operands, but also on their descendants, in a “deep” manner. In this paper, we identify the needs of such “deep” set operators and propose the deep-union, deep-intersect and deep-except operators. We further
Multi-level ray tracing algorithm
"... We propose new approaches to ray tracing that greatly reduce the required number of operations while strictly preserving the geometrical correctness of the solution. A hierarchical “beam” structure serves as a proxy for a collection of rays. It is tested against a kd-tree representing the overall sc ..."

scene in order to discard from consideration the sub-set of the kd-tree (and hence the scene) that is guaranteed not to intersect with any possible ray inside the beam. This allows for all the rays inside the beam to start traversing the tree from some node deep inside thus eliminating unnecessary
New method in telluric prospecting for detecting deep conductors, not intersecting with wells

Deep and lifelong learning: When theory and SoTL intersect
"... Abstract: In this reflective essay, a teacher educator describes her own transformation that occurred as a result of studying adult learning theory along with a group of doctoral students. In examining her habits of course design, she realized that her practices had departed from her ideals and that ..."

Guided by these influences, she reconceptualized

Abstract: The type of learning that takes place in teacher education courses typically results in pre-service teachers developing a mixture of knowledge, skills and values that enable them to become effective teachers in schools in the future. During their journey to become qualified teachers, pre-service teachers typically engage in coursework and experiential-based learning. By engaging in coursework experiences, an overseas practicum and an overseas study tour, students experienced a range of reflection-promoting activities and contexts during which they broadened and deepened their understanding of cultures other than their own. Using a cross-case analysis approach, the data gathered in these three cases were evaluated using an experiential learning theoretical framework. This article reports on findings from three separate but related studies in which students ’ learning about cultures other than their own was analysed and used to provide a set of practical recommendations for teacher education courses and programs.
Intersection Types,-models, and Bohm Trees

Deep crustal structure of the area of intersection between the Shackleton Fracture Zone and the West Scotia Ridge (Drake Passage, Antarctica)
, 2000

The West Scotia Ridge, an extinct spreading centre, formed the oceanic crust of the western Scotia Plate and intersects the Shac ..."
