Affective Computing

by R. W. Picard , 1995
"... Recent neurological studies indicate that the role of emotion in human cognition is essential; emotions are not a luxury. Instead, emotions play a critical role in rational decision-making, in perception, in human interaction, and in human intelligence. These facts, combined with abilities computers ..."

The discovery of increased formation of methylglyoxal (MG) by cell metabolism in high glucose concentration in vitro suggested possible relevance to diabetes and di-abetes complications (1,2). MG is the precursor of quantitatively important advanced glycation end prod-ucts (AGEs) of protein and DNA- and MG-derived AGEs increase in experimental and clinical diabetes (3,4). In-creased MG and its metabolism by glyoxalase 1 (Glo1) was linked to clinical microvascular complications (ne-phropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy) (5). Current clinical treatment decreasing MG and MG-derived AGEs, such as insulin lispro (6,7), has some clinical benefit in diabetic nephropathy (8), although the decrease in MG-derived AGE exposure is minor—;17 % (7). Greater benefits may be achieved with specific and effective anti-

The Ponder Policy Specification Language

by Nicodemos Damianou , Naranker Dulay , Emil Lupu , Morris Sloman - LECTURE NOTES IN COMPUTER SCIENCE , 2001
"... The Ponder language provides a common means of specifying security policies that map onto various access control implementation mechanisms for firewalls, operating systems, databases and Java. It supports obligation policies that are event triggered conditionaction rules for policy based management ..."

of networks and distributed systems. Ponder can also be used for security management activities such as registration of users or logging and auditing events for dealing with access to critical resources or security violations. Key concepts of the language include roles to group policies relating to a position

A Metrics Suite for Object Oriented Design

by Shyam R. Chidamber , Chris F. Kemerer , 1994
"... Given the central role that software development plays in the delivery and application of information technology, managers are increasingly focusing on process improvement in the software development area. This demand has spurred the provision of a number of new and/or improved approaches to softwa ..."

THE CRITICAL ROLE OF LABOUR MOBILITY

by Erkki Koskela, Erkki Koskela, Rune Stenbacka , 2002
"... We investigate the interaction between labour and credit market imperfections for the determination of equilibrium unemployment within the framework of the "right-tomanage " approach. Our analysis highlights the critical role of labour mobility for the evaluation of the employment implicat ..."

The Retinoblastoma Protein and Cell-Cycle Control

by Robert A. Weinberg - Cell , 1995
"... pRB, the product of the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor gene, operates in the midst of the cell cycle clock appara-tus. Its main role is to act as a signal transducer connecting the cell cycle clock with the transcriptional machinery. In this role, pRB allows the clock to control the expression of b ..."

A Fluid-based Analysis of a Network of AQM Routers Supporting TCP Flows with an Application to RED

by Vishal Misra, WeiBo Gong, Don Towsley - Proc. SIGCOMM 2000 , 2000
"... In this paper we use jump process driven Stochastic Differential Equations to model the interactions of a set of TCP flows and Active Queue Management routers in a network setting. We show how the SDEs can be transformed into a set of Ordinary Differential Equations which can be easily solved numeri ..."

We explain the role played by the RED configuration parameters on the behavior of the algorithm in a network. We point out a flaw in the RED averaging mechanism which we believe is a
