Basic concepts and taxonomy of dependable and secure computing
- IEEE TDSC
, 2004
"... This paper gives the main definitions relating to dependability, a generic concept including as special case such attributes as reliability, availability, safety, integrity, maintainability, etc. Security brings in concerns for confidentiality, in addition to availability and integrity. Consistency of spectral clustering
, 2004
"... Consistency is a key property of statistical algorithms, when the data is drawn from some underlying probability distribution. Surprisingly, despite decades of work, little is known about consistency of most clustering algorithms. In this paper we investigate consistency of a popular family of spe ..."

of spectral clustering algorithms, which cluster the data with the help of eigenvectors of graph Laplacian matrices. We show that one of the two of major classes of spectral clustering (normalized clustering) converges under some very general conditions, while the other (unnormalized), is only consistent
Integrating classification and association rule mining
- In Proc of KDD
, 1998
"... Classification rule mining aims to discover a small set of rules in the database that forms an accurate classifier. Association rule mining finds all the rules existing in the database that satisfy some minimum support and minimum confidence constraints. For association rule mining, the target of di ..."

). An efficient algorithm is also given for building a classifier based on the set of discovered CARs. Experimental results show that the classifier built this way is, in general, more accurate than that produced by the state-of-the-art classification system C4.5. In addition, this integration helps to solve a
Surround-screen projection-based virtual reality: The design and implementation of the CAVE
, 1993
"... Abstract Several common systems satisfy some but not all of the VR This paper describes the CAVE (CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment) virtual reality/scientific visualization system in detail and demonstrates that projection technology applied to virtual-reality goals achieves a system that matches ..."

the quality of workstation screens in terms of resolution, color, and flicker-free stereo. In addition, this format helps reduce the effect of common tracking and system latency errors. The off-axis perspective projection techniques we use are shown to be simple and straightforward. Our techniques for doing
Impulses and Physiological States in Theoretical Models of Nerve Membrane
- Biophysical Journal
, 1961
"... ABSTRACT Van der Pol's equation for a relaxation oscillator is generalized by the addition of terms to produce a pair of non-linear differential equations with either a stable singular point or a limit cycle. The resulting "BVP model " has two variables of state, representing excitabi ..."

Mega: molecular evolutionary genetic analysis software for microcomputers
- CABIOS
, 1994
"... A computer program package called MEGA has been developed for estimating evolutionary distances, reconstructing phylogenetic trees and computing basic statistical quantities from molecular data. It is written in C+ + and is intended to be used on IBM and IBM-compatible personal computers. In this pr ..."

, new algorithms of branch-and-bound and heuristic searches are implemented. In addition, MEGA computes statistical quantities such as nucleotide and amino acid frequencies, transition/transversion biases, codon frequencies (codon usage tables), and the number of variable sites in specified segments
Simple statistical gradient-following algorithms for connectionist reinforcement learning
- Machine Learning
, 1992
"... Abstract. This article presents a general class of associative reinforcement learning algorithms for connectionist networks containing stochastic units. These algorithms, called REINFORCE algorithms, are shown to make weight adjustments in a direction that lies along the gradient of expected reinfor ..."

Also given are results that show how such algorithms can be naturally integrated with backpropagation. We close with a brief discussion of a number of additional issues

ABSTRACT Trehalose is a disaccharide that occurs naturally in insects, plants, fungi, and bacteria. The major dietary source is mushrooms. Trehalose is used in bakery goods, beverages, confectionery, fruit jam, breakfast cereals, rice, and noodles as a texturizer, stabilizer, humectant, or formulation aid with a low sweetening intensity. Trehalose is a naturally occurring disaccharide with known protein and membrane stabilizing capability. Although trehalose absorption in humans has not been well studied, a small fraction (0.5%) is likely to be absorbed by passive diffusion, as has been demonstrated for other dissacharides
Does Financial Liberalization Spur Growth
- Journal of Financial Economics
, 2005
"... We show that equity market liberalizations, on average, lead to a one percent increase in annual real economic growth over a five-year period. The effect is robust to alternative definitions of liberalization and does not reflect a business cycle effect. The channel of growth is both increased inves ..."

The additional investment is largely financed by foreign capital leading to deteriorating trade balances. Some of the liberalization effect can be accounted for by coincidental macroeconomic
Observations on the dynamics of a congestion control algorithm: The effects of two-way traffic
- In Proceedings of ACM SIGCOMM
, 1991
"... We use simulation to study the dynamics of the congestion cent rol algorithm embedded in the BSD 4.3-Tahoe TCP implementation. We investigate the simple case of a few TCP connections, originating and terminating at the same pair of hosts, using a single bottleneck link. This work is an extension of ..."

that the one-way traffic clustering and loss-synchronization phenomena d~cussed in [16] persist in this new situation, albeit in a slightly modified form. In addition, there are two new phenomena not present in the earlier study: (1) ACK-compression, which is due to the interaction of data and ACK packets
